Odisha Sprinter Pratik Maharana Sets Sights on Breaking 21-Second Barrier
Odisha's rising sprint sensation, Pratik Maharana, is gearing up for a monumental performance at the upcoming National Junior Athletics Federation meet in Tumkur, Karnataka. This competition serves as the final trial for the prestigious U20 World Athletics Championships scheduled for August in Lima, Peru. Maharana, who has already secured his spot for the Worlds, is not content with his current achievements and is determined to push his limits further.
Record-Breaking Performance and World Championship Ambitions
In a stunning display of speed and skill last October, Pratik Maharana clocked an impressive 21.24 seconds in the 200m event at the National Junior Athletics meet held in Bhubaneswar. This record-breaking time not only earned him a gold medal but also guaranteed his qualification for the U20 World Athletics Championships. However, the young athlete has set his sights even higher. "I am confident of going under 21 seconds," Maharana declared in an exclusive interview with Times of India before departing for the tournament. He expressed his unwavering focus on making it to the Worlds, having already competed in key events such as the indoor nationals in Bhubaneswar and the Indian Athletics Series 4 in Ranchi earlier this year.
Overcoming Early Challenges with Coach Siba Prasad Mishra
Maharana's journey to athletic prominence has been marked by resilience and dedication, guided by his long-time coach Siba Prasad Mishra. Coach Mishra first discovered Maharana in 2017 in Bargarh when the sprinter was just 9-10 years old. After discussions with Maharana's father, Mishra brought him to Bhubaneswar for training. However, the path was not without obstacles. Initial lack of family support and the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic forced Maharana to return to Bargarh, temporarily halting his training.
During the pandemic in 2021, a chance encounter reignited Maharana's athletic career. Coach Mishra, while on a morning walk, spotted Maharana delivering food on his bicycle to support his family. "His mother and others would cook, and he would deliver it to underprivileged people in return for a paltry amount of money," Mishra recalled. This moment of hardship prompted Mishra to take Maharana under his wing, leading to a remarkable turnaround. Training resumed in Bargarh with 12 other trainees, and Mishra even established a gym to support their development.
Breakthrough Season and Strategic Training Plan
The year 2024 marked a significant breakthrough for Maharana when he and his coach shifted to Rourkela to train at the Birsa Munda Athletic Stadium under the Athletics Project Odisha initiative. This move proved transformative, as Maharana enjoyed a standout season. He clinched the 200m gold at the National Youth Athletics Championship in Bilaspur with a time of 21.65 seconds, followed by another gold at the South Asian U20 Athletics Championships. He capped off the year with a victory at the National Junior Athletics Championships, clocking 21.28 seconds.
Now, with the U20 World Championships as his primary goal, Coach Mishra has devised a comprehensive training strategy. "We have been working on improving his technique. Next comes competitions, where his temperament and mentality need to improve. The final phase will be reducing workload and focusing on recovery," Mishra explained. This phased approach aims to optimize Maharana's performance and ensure he is in peak condition for the global stage.
Immediate Focus on Tumkur Meet and Asian U20 Championships
Maharana's immediate priority is the National Junior Athletics Federation meet in Tumkur, which not only serves as a trial for the World Championships but also as a qualification event for the Asian U20 Athletics Championships in Hong Kong from May 28 to 31. A strong performance here will solidify his position and boost his confidence ahead of the international competitions. As Maharana continues to train rigorously, his story of perseverance and ambition serves as an inspiration to aspiring athletes across India, highlighting the potential for greatness even in the face of adversity.
