Praggnanandhaa Delivers Tactical Brilliance in FIDE Candidates 2026 Opening Round

The 2026 FIDE Candidates tournament commenced at the Cap St Georges Hotel & Resort in Paphos, Cyprus, with a day that defied conventional chess wisdom. While theory often suggests draws in perfect play, the opening round demonstrated volatility and decisive action, particularly in the Open section.

Decisive Results Highlight Open Section Action

Of the eight games played across both categories, only three produced winners, all occurring in the Open section. The day's standout performance came from India's R Praggnanandhaa, who executed a clinical victory over Dutch top seed Anish Giri.

Uzbek grandmaster Javokhir Sindarov, the 2025 FIDE World Cup champion, secured the first win by defeating Russia's Andrey Esipenko. In an intense American showdown, Fabiano Caruana emerged victorious against Hikaru Nakamura in the longest game of the round, lasting over six hours.

Praggnanandhaa's Masterclass Against Giri

The Chennai-born prodigy, aged 20, showcased deep preparation and technical prowess. Opening with the King's Pawn, Praggnanandhaa faced Giri's Sicilian Defence with the aggressive Grand Prix Attack. On move 10, he sacrificed a pawn, followed by a queen improvement on move 11 that capitalized on Giri's slight inaccuracy.

Veteran GM Pravin Thipsay analyzed: "Praggnanandhaa played the Grand Prix attack interestingly. A slight mistake on the 11th move by Anish enabled Praggnanandhaa to get a slight advantage, which he carried home with very good technical play from move 12."

Giri's response with 11...Be6 allowed Praggnanandhaa to capture the bishop on move 13, gaining structural superiority. Despite queen exchanges by move 25, the endgame favored the Indian, who sealed victory when Giri resigned on move 51. Praggnanandhaa achieved a remarkable 97.3% accuracy versus Giri's 92.5%.

Women's Section Sees Cautious Draws

In contrast, the Women's section produced no decisive results, with all four games ending in draws. Russian GM Aleksandra Goryachkina came closest to a win against compatriot Kateryna Lagno but blundered in the middlegame, forcing a split point.

Indian players Divya Deshmukh and Rameshbabu Vaishali held their ground with white pieces against Anna Muzychuk and Bibisara Assaubayeva respectively, keeping the Indian contingent unbeaten.
