Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema recently visited the residence of teenage athlete Sehnoor Bawa in Khadial village, Dirba Assembly constituency, to honour her for winning a gold medal in the relay race at the Under-20 Asian Athletics Championship held in Hong Kong.
Government Assurance and Support
Cheema assured Sehnoor of complete government backing as she prepares for future national and international competitions. He stated that under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the Punjab government has implemented sports-friendly policies that enable young talent from rural areas to excel.
The Finance Minister expressed confidence that Sehnoor will represent India at the Olympics and other global events, bringing further glory to the region. He promised that all necessary equipment, facilities, and financial assistance for her training would be provided.
Infrastructure Development
Cheema highlighted the government's commitment to strengthening sports infrastructure. He announced that a modern stadium will be built in Khadial village to nurture more athletes. Additionally, a state-of-the-art indoor stadium is under construction in Dirba town, featuring facilities for eleven sports disciplines simultaneously.
The minister also mentioned that qualified coaches are being deployed in various villages to identify and train young talent.

Cheema congratulated Sehnoor's coach, Jaspreet Singh, for recognizing her potential and grooming her into an international-calibre athlete. He lauded Sehnoor's family for their support, noting that it is exceptional for a village girl to achieve such laurels.
