Record-Breaking Turnout for Naval Marathon

The Western Naval Command Half Marathon 2025 witnessed an unprecedented response on Sunday as over 23,000 registered participants created a new record for the annual event. The 10-kilometer segment was officially flagged off by Bollywood actors Riteish Deshmukh and Suniel Shetty alongside Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command.

Bollywood Glamour Meets Naval Pride

Sunday morning saw hundreds of enthusiastic runners gathering for the 8th edition of this prestigious marathon. The event gained additional star power with the presence of Suniel Shetty's son, actor Ahan Shetty, who joined his father on stage to flag off the marathon. The young actor's participation held special significance as he prepares to portray an Indian Navy officer in his upcoming film 'Border 2'.

Riteish Deshmukh emphasized the historical connection between Mumbai and the Navy during his media interaction. "Mumbai and the Navy have had an unbreakable bond for years. Indian shipbuilding began here in Mumbai," he stated. "This is the Navy's outreach program to connect with the people of Mumbai and bridge the gap. 23,000 people are participating in the marathon today. Everyone should prioritize fitness and play a sport."

Tribute to Naval Courage and Sacrifice

Suniel Shetty used the platform to honor the bravery of Indian Navy personnel, drawing a powerful comparison between the marathon and their daily service. "I want to thank the Naval officers for the love and respect they gave us," he expressed. "For us, this 21km marathon is about endurance, stamina, and fitness, but the marathon our officers run for us every day is one of courage and sacrifice with no finish line."

The veteran actor strongly advocated for more frequent organization of such events, noting that "marathons like this should be organised frequently... Events like these bring people together." He described his son's upcoming role as a Navy officer as an "honourable moment" for both of them.

Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan clarified the strategic purpose behind the massive sporting event. "The WNC Half Marathon is an outreach effort of the Indian Navy and the Western Naval Command to connect with the people of Mumbai," he shared with media representatives. "It is an important event in the city's annual calendar."

City Support and Infrastructure

The record-breaking participation necessitated major arrangements, with Mumbai Police issuing a comprehensive traffic advisory to monitor and manage vehicular movements in South Mumbai during the event. The marathon, organized by the Indian Navy through the Western Naval Command, successfully strengthened the naval force's outreach within Mumbai and its residents.

The overwhelming response of 23,000 registrations demonstrates the growing popularity of fitness culture in Mumbai while reinforcing the strong bond between the city and its naval guardians.
