Indore's Sapna Sharma Clinches Fourth Consecutive Gold at Para Taekwondo Nationals
In a remarkable display of skill and determination, 35-year-old para taekwondo athlete Sapna Sharma from Indore has secured her fourth consecutive gold medal at the Para Taekwondo National Championship 2025-26. The prestigious event was held on March 28 and 29 at the Koramangala Stadium in Bengaluru, drawing top athletes from across the country.
A Commanding Performance Against Strong Competition
Competing against nearly 70 athletes, Sapna delivered a commanding performance throughout the tournament. She maintained control in each bout, showcasing her technical prowess and strategic acumen. Her journey culminated in a confident display in the final, where she sealed the title with authority. The silver medal was won by Mamata of Telangana, while Krishnaveni secured the bronze, highlighting the competitive nature of the championship.
Competing in the P52 Category as a Display Event
Sapna competed in the P52 category, which was conducted as a display event during the championship. The P52 classification is based on the degree and nature of an athlete's physical impairment, ensuring fair competition among participants with similar levels of disability. She has represented India at the international level but admits that on several occasions, she could not participate due to a lack of resources. "There were times when I qualified for international events but could not travel because of financial difficulties. Still, I never gave up," she said, reflecting on the obstacles she has overcome.

Sapna credits her success to discipline, self-belief, and perseverance. "My biggest challenge has been my physical condition, along with managing work and family. But every difficulty made me stronger," she explained. She considers her own life and struggles as her greatest source of inspiration, using them to fuel her drive for excellence.

Supported by her husband Sanjay Verma and daughter Hanaya, Sapna now aims to win more medals for India at the international level.
