Kenya's Sabastian Sawe shattered the London Marathon world record on Sunday, clocking an astonishing 2:00:35 to win the elite men's race. The 28-year-old, making his marathon debut, obliterated the previous mark of 2:01:09 set by Eliud Kipchoge in 2022. Sawe's performance was the fastest marathon ever run on British soil and the second-fastest in history, behind only Kipchoge's official world record of 1:59:40 in Vienna.
Race Dynamics
Sawe took control early, breaking away from the lead pack around the 30-kilometer mark. He maintained a blistering pace, crossing the halfway point in 60:15. Despite a slight slowdown in the final kilometers, he finished strong, leaving defending champion Amos Kipruto over a minute behind. Kipruto finished second in 2:01:41, while Ethiopia's Birhanu Legese took third in 2:02:13.
Women's Race
In the women's elite race, Ethiopia's Tigist Assefa also set a new course record, winning in 2:15:37, breaking Paula Radcliffe's long-standing mark of 2:17:42 from 2005. Assefa, the world record holder with a time of 2:11:53, dominated from the start, finishing over two minutes ahead of runner-up Joyciline Jepkosgei of Kenya.
The London Marathon, one of the six World Marathon Majors, attracted over 40,000 runners this year. The event also featured wheelchair races, with Switzerland's Marcel Hug winning the men's event and American Tatyana McFadden taking the women's title.
Sawe's performance has sparked excitement about the future of marathon running, with many wondering if Kipchoge's official world record could be challenged soon. Sawe, a former track runner, has now established himself as a force in road racing, and his debut suggests even faster times may be ahead.
