Shubman Gill enters elite list with back-to-back 600-run seasons

Shubman Gill etched his name in the Indian Premier League record books on Thursday, becoming only the third captain in the tournament's history to amass 600 or more runs in back-to-back seasons. He achieved this milestone during the Gujarat Titans' final league-stage match against the Chennai Super Kings at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Gill reached the landmark with a scintillating 64-run knock off just 37 balls, propelling the Gujarat Titans to a formidable total of 229 for 4 in their allotted 20 overs. This performance ensured that the Titans finished their league campaign on a high note.

In IPL 2025, Gill had already showcased his batting prowess by scoring 650 runs in 15 matches for the Gujarat Titans. This season, with 616 runs so far, he has joined the esteemed company of David Warner and KL Rahul. Warner was the first captain to achieve this feat, scoring 848 runs in 17 matches in IPL 2016 and 641 runs in 14 matches in IPL 2017 for the Sunrisers Hyderabad. KL Rahul followed suit, scoring 670 runs in 14 matches as Punjab Kings captain in IPL 2020 and 626 runs in 13 matches in IPL 2021. He later scored 616 runs in 15 matches while leading the Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2022.

Gill's innings was a testament to the Gujarat Titans' successful batting formula, where the top order has consistently shouldered the scoring responsibility. Sai Sudharsan top-scored with an impressive 84 off 53 balls, while Jos Buttler remained unbeaten on a rapid 57 off just 27 deliveries. Gill and Sudharsan provided a brisk start on the red-soil pitch, with Gill taking the attack to the bowlers from the outset. Sudharsan took his time to settle before accelerating after the powerplay.

Gill reached his fifty in just 23 balls, smashing two sixes off Noor Ahmad in the process. He also crossed the 6000-run mark in T20 cricket during his innings. Sudharsan later completed his fifth consecutive IPL fifty off 35 balls, joining an elite list featuring Virender Sehwag, David Warner, and Jos Buttler.

The 125-run partnership between Gill and Sudharsan was a highlight of the innings. It helped them equal the IPL record for the most 100-run partnerships, alongside the legendary duo of Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers, who also have 10 century stands. Furthermore, Gill and Sudharsan recorded their seventh 100-plus partnership together, setting a new IPL record.
