Elina Svitolina secured her third Italian Open title on Sunday, defeating American teenager Coco Gauff 6-3, 6-3 in a commanding performance at the Foro Italico in Rome. The Ukrainian star, seeded fifth, broke Gauff's serve early in both sets and maintained relentless pressure to clinch the victory in just over an hour.
Dominant Display from Svitolina
Svitolina, a former world number three, showcased her trademark defensive skills and court coverage, neutralizing Gauff's powerful groundstrokes. She saved all three break points she faced and converted four of her nine opportunities on Gauff's serve. The win marks Svitolina's 17th career WTA title and her first since the 2021 Chicago Open.
Gauff's Struggle
Gauff, the 18-year-old world number six, struggled with consistency, committing 25 unforced errors compared to Svitolina's 12. The American had defeated top-ranked Iga Swiatek in the semifinals but could not replicate that form against the experienced Svitolina. Despite the loss, Gauff's run to the final in Rome will boost her confidence ahead of the French Open.
Svitolina, who missed much of 2022 due to injury and pregnancy, has now won the Italian Open three times (2017, 2018, 2023), tying the record for most titles in the tournament's history. Her victory also extends her winning streak to 10 matches on clay this season.
The Italian Open, a key preparation event for the French Open, saw Svitolina drop only one set en route to the title. She will now head to Paris as a strong contender for the Roland Garros crown.
