Taylor Barnard's Formula E Transition: Struggles and Adaptation at DS Penske

Since moving to DS Penske this season, things have yet to look up for Taylor Barnard. The Briton, who was the youngest Formula E driver last year and secured multiple podiums in his rookie campaign, is still searching for his stride in the current championship. However, his dedicated work ethic and self-reflection suggest that results may be on the horizon sooner rather than later. The 21-year-old recently opened up about his ongoing struggles and how this season contrasts sharply with his debut year.

From NEOM McLaren to DS Penske: A Team Switch Challenge

Taylor Barnard made his Formula E debut with NEOM McLaren in Season 10, but he truly established himself as a full-time driver last season. Following the team's exit from the motorsport, Barnard transitioned to DS Penske, while his former teammate Sam Bird pursued other opportunities. This shift has presented significant hurdles for the young driver.

In an interview with Formulae.com, Barnard candidly discussed the complexities of switching teams. "You know the basics and you know that you have systems and you know that you have the same tyres and it's the same car. But the way that you actually try to maximise it is completely different. So, I’ll be honest and say I’m still getting used to it," he explained. He emphasized his preference for self-criticism over complacency, adding, "It's been okay. I prefer to be a bit harsh on myself and make sure that I keep working as hard as I can instead of being relaxed and going, ‘Oh, everyone’s telling me I’m doing a great job’, so I’d rather work a bit too hard than the opposite."

Growing Comfort in the Formula E Paddock

Taylor Barnard is no longer the youngest driver on the Formula E grid, as new rookies like Pepe Martí have joined this season. Reflecting on his evolving experience, Barnard noted increased familiarity within the paddock. "To be honest, the longer that I stay here, obviously the more familiar faces I know. Last year was a little bit intimidating not knowing everybody, and Sam (Bird) was walking through the paddock and saying hello to everyone left and right. But this year I feel a bit more comfortable; I know a lot of people around here," he shared.

He also speculated on future changes in the sport, stating, "I think in the next couple of years some of the older guys on the grid will not be here anymore and perhaps some of my friends or my colleagues, I guess, from people who I’ve raced in my junior career will be stepping in. So, I think the times will change in the next few years."

Current Season Performance and Outlook

Despite not yet hitting top form this season, Barnard has shown flashes of potential. He came close to a podium finish in Mexico, securing a fourth-place result. Currently, he holds the 13th position in the Formula E Drivers’ Standings with 14 points. With eleven races remaining before the season concludes, there is ample opportunity for improvement and a climb up the rankings.

Barnard's journey this season highlights the challenges of adapting to a new team in a competitive motorsport environment, but his resilience and hard work indicate that better performances could be imminent.
