Three Athletes Come Close to National Records at Indian Athletics Series
Three Athletes Near National Records at Athletics Series

CHENNAI: The Indian Athletics Series 6 meet witnessed three athletes coming agonisingly close to rewriting national records. In the men's 110m hurdles, current national record holder Tejas Shirse stormed to victory in 13.43 seconds, narrowly edging out training partner M Krishik, who finished second in 13.44 seconds. Meanwhile, in the high jump pit, Aadarsh Ram scaled 2.27 meters to claim top honours with a standout performance.

Tejas Shirse's Comeback

For Tejas, this was the first meet after a four-month injury layoff. Having trained for just three weeks, he was within touching distance of the Commonwealth Games qualifying mark. "It was a very difficult period, and I was thinking of giving up. But I fought a tough battle and struggled with mental issues as well. I was in good shape running 13.3 seconds, and the injury broke my momentum. If I can do 13.43 seconds after just three weeks of training, then it is a great achievement," Tejas said.

Aadarsh Ram's Rise

High jumper Aadarsh from Tamil Nadu became the country's third-best high jumper. Going into the competition, the Asian Indoors bronze medallist had a personal best of 2.23 meters, which he bettered with clearances of 2.24 meters and 2.27 meters. He also attempted the national record but fell short at 2.30 meters.

Sreeshankar and Baranica Top Performers

Murali Sreeshankar from Kerala registered 8.04 meters in the men's long jump. The 27-year-old committed three fouls and felt that the heat sapped all his energy. Pole vaulter Baranica Elangovan, who broke the national record twice this year, leapt 4.10 meters to secure the top position. Krishna Jayasankar threw the iron ball to 16.96 meters to cross the Asian Games qualifying mark, and in discus throw she finished second with 53.37 meters. Nidhi Rani, with a throw of 58.82 meters in discus, breached both the Asian and Commonwealth Games qualifying marks.
