The Goa State Biodiversity Board (GSBB) has announced its awards for 2025, recognizing outstanding contributions to biodiversity and environmental conservation. Among the winners, TOI reporter Gauree Malkarnekar was honored with the Green Journalist award for her vital role in highlighting Goa’s environmental concerns and conservation efforts through impactful and balanced reporting.
Recognition for Environmental Journalism
The GSBB stated that Malkarnekar’s work has significantly contributed to environmental awareness in Goa, covering issues such as the protection of nesting turtles, biodiversity conservation, forest fires, waste management, and the Mhadei water diversion dispute. Her reporting has shed light on critical ecological topics, fostering public understanding and action.
Other Awardees
Another TOI journalist, Nida Sayed, received the Green Journalist appreciation award, alongside Prasad Ravindra Sawant and Gurpreet Singh. These individuals were recognized for their dedication to environmental reporting and awareness.
Award Ceremony Details
The award presentation is scheduled to take place on the International Day for Biological Diversity 2026, on May 22, at Lok Bhavan, Dona Paula. The event will be held under the theme ‘Acting Locally for Global Impact’, emphasizing the importance of local actions in achieving global biodiversity goals.
