UFC to Stage Unprecedented White House Event with Rule-Breaking Changes
The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is preparing to host one of the most unconventional events in its storied history on June 14, 2026, with UFC CEO Dana White confirming that the promotion will deliberately break its own long-standing rules for the special occasion. Dubbed UFC Freedom 250, this card represents a significant departure from the organization's standard operational playbook, setting the stage for a landmark spectacle.
UFC Freedom 250: A White House Card Unlike Any Before
UFC Freedom 250, often informally referred to as the "UFC White House" card, is scheduled to take place on Sunday, June 14, 2026, on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington D.C. The event strategically coincides with the 250th anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence (1776–2026) and the 80th birthday of US President Donald Trump. While initial proposals aimed for a July 4th date to align with Independence Day festivities, logistical and security complexities associated with hosting a large-scale sporting event at the White House on that day prompted a shift. The date was ultimately moved to June 14th to coincide with Flag Day and President Trump's birthday, with reports indicating the president personally advocated for the White House to host the card.
This event is poised to serve as a centerpiece of national celebrations. It will feature a condensed seven-fight card, a notable reduction from the typical 12 or 13 bouts seen on numbered UFC events. Tickets are expected to be distributed primarily to members of the military. The headline bout will see Ilia Topuria defend his lightweight championship against Justin Gaethje. The co-main event features a high-stakes interim heavyweight title clash between Alex Pereira and Ciryl Gane.
In a unique twist, heavyweight contender Derrick Lewis was added to the card following a direct request from President Trump. Dana White revealed that the call came during UFC 327, prompting him to immediately contact Lewis to confirm his participation. Lewis has since been matched against the undefeated Josh Hokit, who recently improved his record to 9-0 with a decision victory over Curtis Blaydes in Miami.
The Historic Rule UFC Is Breaking
The most significant deviation from UFC tradition concerns the event's opening ceremony. In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, Dana White confirmed that UFC Freedom 250 will include a live performance of "The Star-Spangled Banner," a practice the promotion has deliberately avoided for many years.
"We don't do the national anthem," White stated, explaining that his longstanding objection has centered on how it slows down events and conflicts with the UFC's global identity. "One of the things that drives me crazy with boxing is they have to sing two national anthems and all of this stuff before the fight starts. We're an international business. We have people from everywhere."
He elaborated that the concern has always been about the global nature of the sport. "We could end up singing two national anthems that are not even from this country, plus, the whole world's watching us. We're in over a billion homes worldwide so I don't do it."
This firm position is being set aside exclusively for this historic event. "This will be the first time in a very long time, since like UFC double-digits, that we've done the national anthem," White said, confirming that country music star Zac Brown will perform the anthem on June 14.
Bonus Structure Also Adjusted for the Occasion
The UFC is implementing a second major change for UFC Freedom 250, this time to its post-fight bonus system. While the standard Fight of the Night and Performance of the Night bonuses will still be awarded, an additional $1 million in post-fight bonuses will be introduced through sponsor Crypto.com. These extra incentives have been described as the largest single-event bonus pool in UFC history and will be applicable to all 14 fighters competing on the card.
What Makes UFC Freedom 250 Fundamentally Different
From its iconic venue to its condensed fight card and now its altered format, UFC Freedom 250 is being treated as a distinct entity from a standard UFC event. Dana White has previously hinted that fighters could make their walkouts from the Oval Office, though current expectations suggest only the main event competitors will have that honor. Combined with the inclusion of the national anthem and the unprecedented bonus structure, this event marks a clear and deliberate shift from the UFC's usual streamlined, globally-focused presentation.
