UP Olympic Association Aims to Bring National Youth Games to Lucknow
The Uttar Pradesh Olympic Association (UPOA) is actively planning to bid for hosting the National Youth Games in Lucknow, following a strong push from Defence Minister and Lucknow MP Rajnath Singh. This initiative serves as a strategic precursor to potentially hosting the larger National Games in the future, testing the state's capabilities and infrastructure.
Minister's Vision Sparks Preparations
During the Sansad Khel Maha Kumbh event held at KD Singh 'Babu' Stadium in April last year, Rajnath Singh made a formal request to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, urging that Lucknow should be chosen as the host city for the National Games. He highlighted that Lucknow hosted the first and only National Games in 1948, which was also the inaugural edition held in independent India, making it a historically significant location for national sports.
UPOA Secretary General Anandeshwar Pandey confirmed that the association is diligently preparing for this opportunity, keeping in mind the wishes of both the defence minister and the chief minister. "If the state government gives us the go-ahead, we will bid for the first-ever National Youth Games on the lines of the World Youth Games," Pandey stated. He noted that Karnataka was originally scheduled to host this event in 2011, but it never materialized, leaving an opening for Uttar Pradesh to step in.
Comprehensive Event Planning Underway
The proposed National Youth Games are envisioned to include at least 15 different sports disciplines, with a distributed approach to venues. Water sports events are planned to be held in Gorakhpur, while the remaining disciplines, including shooting—contingent on the readiness of the Nagar Nigam facility—will take place in Lucknow. This setup aims to leverage existing infrastructure across the state and ensure a smooth execution of the games.
Pandey emphasized that Uttar Pradesh possesses ample sporting infrastructure, which would support such a large-scale event. "If Lucknow is awarded the National Games, it will mark a new chapter in the sporting history of both the city and Uttar Pradesh," he remarked, underscoring the potential long-term benefits for sports development in the region.
Future Prospects for National Games
Regarding the National Games, Pandey clarified that the next edition has already been allocated to Meghalaya. However, Uttar Pradesh is poised to bid for subsequent editions once it receives official approval from the state government for both bidding and organizing responsibilities. This step-by-step approach allows the UPOA to build momentum and demonstrate organizational prowess through the Youth Games first.
The association's efforts align with broader goals to enhance Uttar Pradesh's profile in national sports, fostering athletic talent and promoting healthy competition among youth. By hosting such events, the state aims to revive its historical connection to major sporting milestones and inspire future generations of athletes.
