Vadodara Marathon to Feature Groundbreaking Gazra Run for Inclusivity
The upcoming 13th Vadodara Marathon is set to make history with the introduction of the 5.5-km Gazra Run, hailed as Gujarat's first inclusive running event. Scheduled for tomorrow, this initiative aims to reinforce the spirit of inclusivity, women empowerment, and mental health awareness, according to the organisers.
Krutika's Journey: A Symbol of Empowerment
Excitement is palpable for 22-year-old Krutika, a transgender outreach worker with Lakshya Trust in Vadodara, who will participate in her first Vadodara Marathon. Krutika is among 700 diverse participants in the Gazra Run, a unique segment under the aegis of Shree Maharani Chimnabai Stree Udyogalaya (SMCSU), led by Radhikaraje Gaekwad of the erstwhile royal family of Baroda.
As Krutika dons the sunshine yellow T-shirt with the Gazra Run logo, she feels prepared to embrace the initiative's core message. "When I heard about the Gazra Run, I knew I wanted to participate... The message of inclusivity and celebrating oneness is significant. Our community seeks to be part of the mainstream, and events like this are crucial steps forward," she shared.
Project Gazra: A Vision for Unity and Well-being
The Gazra Run, announced as an Inclusivity Run under Project Gazra, is designed to bring together individuals across gender, ability, and identity spectrums. This pioneering effort integrates mental health awareness, safety, dignity, and community support into the marathon experience, highlighting a commitment to collective well-being.
The inclusion of the Gazra Run in this year's Heritage Fun Run stemmed from a collaborative effort between Radhikaraje Gaekwad and Vadodara Marathon Chairperson Tejal Amin. Radhikaraje emphasised, "This partnership with the Vadodara Marathon is purpose-driven, ensuring SMCSU's presence is visible, inclusive, and impactful." SMCSU also operates the Gazra cafe in the city, managed by LGBTQ+ community members.
Event Details and Broader Marathon Highlights
The Gazra Run will be separately flagged off on Sunday as part of the 13th MG Vadodara Marathon, with Radhikaraje leading the 700 participants. All finishers will receive medals, symbolising their achievement and the event's inclusive ethos.
The Vadodara International Marathon, certified by the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) and the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), gained recognition in 2025 as Asia's largest non-metro marathon. This year's edition also features the "Jawan Run," showcasing personnel from police, emergency services, and armed forces to highlight discipline and patriotism.
Tejal Amin outlined the marathon's broader goals: "Our motto encompasses sports, cleanliness, service, and sustainability. This event is a movement for a greener, healthier future, aiming to raise awareness about Sustainable Development Goals among one lakh school children in Vadodara."
Co-chairperson Sameer Khera noted enhanced facilities for outstation and international runners, including more medical booths, recovery zones, and comfortable accommodations. The marathon schedule includes various runs, with the Gazra Run starting at 7:30 am, and a total prize pool of Rs 25.06 lakh, including Rs 12.10 lakh for the full marathon.
