NFL Trade Rumors: Vikings' J.J. McCarthy Linked to Rams in Potential Draft Day Deal
The Minnesota Vikings' quarterback room has undergone a significant transformation this offseason, potentially signaling the end of the J.J. McCarthy era. With the signings of veteran signal-callers Kyler Murray and Carson Wentz, speculation is mounting that the 23-year-old McCarthy could be traded on draft day, as predicted by USA TODAY's Jack McKassey.
Vikings' Crowded Quarterback Situation
Minnesota's offseason moves have created a crowded quarterback depth chart. Kyler Murray, with his starting experience, is expected to compete for the primary role, while Carson Wentz will likely battle for the QB2 position. This leaves McCarthy, the team's 2024 first-round pick, in a precarious spot, leading analysts to suggest the Vikings should move on from him to acquire additional draft capital.
Proposed Trade Package with the Rams
ESPN's Bill Barnwell has proposed an intriguing trade scenario that could benefit both teams. In this hypothetical deal, the Los Angeles Rams would acquire the 18th overall first-round pick, the 97th overall third-round pick, and quarterback J.J. McCarthy. In return, the Minnesota Vikings would receive the 13th overall first-round pick.
This move makes strategic sense for the Rams, as veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford approaches 40, and the team needs a long-term solution at the position. McCarthy, despite his struggles, could be revitalized under the guidance of great coaches like Sean McVay, who has a history of turning around quarterbacks' careers.
J.J. McCarthy's NFL Journey and Challenges
J.J. McCarthy entered the NFL with impressive credentials. As a CFP national champion and Rose Bowl Offensive MVP, he was listed as the Big Ten Quarterback of the Year in 2023. The Vikings selected him with the 10th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, but his professional career has been marred by injuries.
He missed his entire rookie season due to a complete meniscus tear in his knee, requiring surgery and placement on the injured reserve list, with Sam Darnold taking his spot. In the 2025 season, McCarthy was expected to return to his college form, where he led the Michigan Wolverines to a 15-0 record and a National Championship, with stats including:
- 240 completions on 332 attempts for 2,991 passing yards and 22 touchdowns
- 202 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns
- Only four interceptions
However, injuries again sidelined him for seven games due to a high ankle sprain, a concussion, and a small hairline fracture in his throwing hand, with Carson Wentz stepping in. In the 10 games he played, McCarthy recorded:
- 140 completions on 243 attempts for 1,632 passing yards and 11 touchdowns
- 12 interceptions and 27 sacks
Barnwell notes, "It might be tough to count on him [McCarthy] making it through a full 17-game season, let alone playing well in the process." This durability concern makes a trade to a team like the Rams, where he could develop behind veteran Matthew Stafford—known for playing through injuries like broken ribs—an appealing option.
Trade Value and Contract Details
According to Jimmy Johnson's draft trade value chart, McCarthy's worth is estimated at the 112th pick, which falls in the middle of the fourth round. Barnwell adds, "And the Rams would be on the hook for $6.6M over the next two years, which isn't much for a developmental backup QB."
McCarthy's contract with Minnesota, as per Spotrac, is a four-year, $21 million deal that includes a $12 million signing bonus, $21 million in guaranteed money, and an average annual income of $5 million. In 2026, he is scheduled to earn a $1 million base salary and a $1.7 million roster bonus, with a $5.9 million cap hit and a $6.3 million dead cap value. His total career earnings through 2026 are $15 million over one season.
Sean McVay's Potential Impact
The ESPN analyst highlights that "great coaches have a habit of revitalizing quarterbacks who didn't look like NFL-caliber starters." A prime example is Baker Mayfield, whose career was turned around by Sean McVay in 2022 after being labeled a bust with Cleveland and Carolina. Mayfield played five games for the Rams, completing 82 of 142 attempts for 850 yards, four touchdowns, two interceptions, and an 86.4 passer rating.
Whether McVay can work similar magic with McCarthy remains to be seen, but a change of scenery could provide the young quarterback with the opportunity to reset and thrive in a supportive environment.
