Michael Jordan's 23XI Racing driver Bubba Wallace found himself in the middle of a tense moment after Sunday's NASCAR Cup Series race at Watkins Glen International. Cameras caught Wallace having an animated discussion with Joe Gibbs Racing driver Christopher Bell on pit road just moments after the race ended. The exchange quickly sparked questions online, especially because both drivers had frustrating afternoons in New York.
While Shane van Gisbergen celebrated another huge win, the attention suddenly shifted toward Wallace and Bell. Wallace finished 29th after spinning during the race, while Bell crossed the line in 21st place. Video from pit road showed Wallace standing close to Bell and moving his hands while speaking. Many fans immediately believed the two drivers were angry at each other after contact on track.
But later, Wallace's spotter Freddie Kraft pushed back on those rumors. Speaking after the race, Kraft said people should not jump to conclusions about the conversation. "You shouldn't speculate. Bubba wasn't mad at Bell," Kraft explained, trying to calm the growing talk surrounding the incident.
Bubba Wallace and Christopher Bell draw attention after heated Watkins Glen pit road moment
Even though the conversation looked intense on camera, neither Bubba Wallace nor Christopher Bell publicly explained what was said between them after the race. That mystery only added more attention to the situation online. Both drivers race for teams connected to major sports names. Wallace drives for 23XI Racing, the NASCAR team co-owned by NBA legend Michael Jordan and NASCAR veteran Denny Hamlin. Bell, meanwhile, races for Joe Gibbs Racing, owned by Joe Gibbs, the former NFL coach who won three Super Bowls before building one of NASCAR's most successful teams.
While Wallace and Bell struggled, Shane van Gisbergen once again showed complete control at Watkins Glen. The New Zealand driver started from pole position and led 74 of the race's 100 laps on his way to his seventh NASCAR Cup Series victory. After climbing out of his No. 97 Chevrolet, van Gisbergen admitted his team did not expect to dominate the weekend after difficult practice sessions.
"We weren't very good in practice, and then qualifying was amazing, and then today, what a race car," van Gisbergen said after the win. He also praised crew chief Stephen Doran for helping him recover after a late pit stop dropped him deep in the field.
"Then Stephen made great calls. I wasn't sure how it was going to work, and then to run them down like that, it's very, very special to do two in a row," he added.
Van Gisbergen briefly fell nearly 30 seconds behind leader Ty Gibbs after pitting under green with 24 laps remaining. But the New Zealander quickly charged back through the field and reclaimed the lead with only 17 laps. He eventually finished 7.288 seconds ahead of Michael McDowell to secure back-to-back Watkins Glen victories.
