Grandmaster P Iniyan from Coimbatore won two gold medals at the Commonwealth Chess Championship, which concluded in Sri Lanka on Tuesday. The championship featured three formats: Rapid, Blitz, and Classical. Iniyan topped both the Rapid and Blitz sections, scoring an impressive 6.5 points out of seven games in each format.
Classical Title and Other Medals
The Classical title was won by Grandmaster Mitrabha Guha, adding to India's strong performance in the tournament. India also secured several other medals. In the Rapid section, Grandmaster Srihari won silver, while Grandmaster Mitrabha Guha took bronze. In the Blitz section, Grandmaster Rohith Krishna claimed silver, and Grandmaster Srihari secured bronze. In the Classical section, Grandmaster Ranindu Liyanage won silver, and Grandmaster Srihari took bronze.
Participating Countries and Players
Players from several Commonwealth countries, including Sri Lanka, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Mauritius, Maldives, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Kenya, Malaysia, Singapore, Scotland, and Canada, competed in the event. The Open section featured 96 players.
Tournament Organization
The tournament was organized by the Sri Lankan Chess Federation from May 16 to 26 and was attended by Sri Lankan ministers, officials of the Commonwealth Chess Association, and delegates from participating countries.
