India Unveils Squads for Thomas and Uber Cup in Denmark

The Badminton Association of India (BAI) has officially announced the national teams for the upcoming Thomas and Uber Cup tournaments, set to take place in Denmark next month. The squads showcase a strategic mix of seasoned champions and emerging young stars, reflecting India's ambition to build on past successes and challenge for top honors on the global stage.

Men's Team: Lakshya Sen Leads Strong Thomas Cup Contingent

Fresh from his impressive runner-up finish at the prestigious All England Open, Lakshya Sen will spearhead the men's team in the Thomas Cup. The squad largely retains the core group that made history by winning the Thomas Cup in 2022, including stalwarts like Kidambi Srikanth and HS Prannoy in singles, along with the world-class doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty.

New faces have also earned their spots through standout performances. Ayush Shetty has been included after showcasing his potential in recent competitions, while MR Arjun returns to the squad following a recovery from injury, adding depth and experience. The team is rounded out by players such as Kiran George, Hariharan Amsakarunan, and Dhruv Kapila, ensuring a well-balanced lineup capable of competing across all matches.

Women's Team: PV Sindhu and Unnati Hooda Headline Uber Cup Challenge

On the women's side, two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu will lead the charge in the Uber Cup, supported by a blend of established names and promising newcomers. Rising star Unnati Hooda, who has been making waves with her recent performances, joins Sindhu in the singles lineup, alongside talents like Tanvi Sharma and Devika Sihag.

The doubles department features the experienced duo of Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly, who bring consistency and skill to the team. Additional players such as Isharani Baruah, Kavipriya Selvam, Simran Singhi, and Tanisha Crasto have been selected to provide versatility and cover multiple formats, enhancing India's chances in the tournament.

Selection Criteria and BAI's Confidence

In a press release, the BAI detailed the selection process, stating that picks were primarily based on BWF rankings as of March 10, with the top five singles players and top two doubles pairs automatically qualifying. "Additional inclusions were made keeping team combinations in mind," the association explained, highlighting players like Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto who earned spots due to their experience across various doubles formats.

BAI General Secretary Sanjay Mishra expressed optimism about the teams' prospects, emphasizing the blend of youth and experience. "We have a good mix of youth and experience in both teams," Mishra said. "The senior players bring stability, and the youngsters are in great form. They've shown they can deliver at this level, which gives us confidence going into the tournament."
