Pakistan Hockey Captain Slams Federation Over Australia Tour Disarray

Pakistan hockey captain Shakeel Ammad Butt has launched a scathing critique of the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) following the national team's tumultuous tour of Australia. Speaking to reporters upon arrival at Lahore Airport early this morning, Butt expressed profound frustration, declaring that the federation had been "telling them lies" and that "enough was enough."

Players Forced to Wash Dishes Before Matches

Butt revealed shocking details about the team's ordeal, stating that players were compelled to perform menial tasks such as cleaning the kitchen and washing dishes before competing in matches. "We can't work with this current management of the federation. When players have to clean the kitchen and wash dishes before going to play a match, what result do you expect from us?" a visibly angry Butt questioned.

Accommodation Nightmares and Airport Delays

The captain outlined severe logistical failures during the trip. According to Butt, the federation failed to properly arrange accommodation, leading to players waiting 13 to 14 hours at Sydney Airport before their flight to Canberra. Upon reaching their hotel, the team was informed that no advance payment had been made, resulting in no confirmed bookings.

Players were left stranded for hours, forced to roam the streets until alternative lodging was secured. Butt described the situation as "pathetic," noting that even the Airbnb accommodation was only arranged for 10 days despite a 13-day stay, necessitating a move to a cheaper residence afterward.

Impact on Performance and Official Response

Butt emphasized that these conditions were embarrassing and directly impacted the team's performance. Pakistan lost 2-3 to Australia in their first FIH Pro League match and subsequently lost all matches during the Australia leg, including games against Australia and Germany.

In response, the Pakistan Sports Board disclosed that it had provided over 10 million rupees to the PHF for hotel arrangements. Director-General Noor us Sabah confirmed that a detailed report is being prepared for Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who has ordered an inquiry into the matter. Prime Minister Sharif serves as the patron-in-chief of the PHF.

Calls for Reform and Foreign Coaching

Butt also revealed that players were warned against speaking to the media, but he chose to speak out due to the hardships endured. "I am speaking up because of what we have been through in Australia," he stated.

Looking forward, Butt advocated for significant changes, including the appointment of a foreign coach. "We need a foreign coach if we have to move forward. We have a good combination of players, but we need a foreign coach and good management," he added, highlighting the urgent need for professional oversight to revive Pakistan's hockey prospects.
