Ahmedabad Police Announce Traffic Restrictions for 2026 T20 World Cup at Narendra Modi Stadium

In preparation for the highly anticipated ICC Men's T20 World Cup India 2026, the Ahmedabad city police have unveiled a detailed plan for traffic management around the Narendra Modi Stadium in Motera. With several international matches scheduled at this premier venue, authorities are implementing strategic restrictions and diversions to ensure seamless movement and prevent congestion on match days.

Official Notification from Police Commissioner

City Police Commissioner G S Malik issued an official notification outlining the traffic curbs, which will be enforced specifically on days when international cricket matches are held at the stadium. The decision stems from the anticipated influx of VVIPs, players, celebrities, and thousands of spectators arriving within a compressed timeframe, necessitating robust traffic control measures.

Key Road Closures and Alternative Routes

According to the police order, a critical stretch from Janpath T Junction to the stadium's main gate, via Krupa Residency T Junction to Motera Gam T Junction, will be completely closed to all vehicular traffic during notified hours on match days. Commuters are strongly advised to utilize alternative routes to avoid disruptions.

Primary Diversion Route:

  • Vehicles can travel from Tapovan Circle via ONGC Crossroads, Visat T Junction, Janpath T Junction, Powerhouse Crossroads, and Prabodh Raval Circle.

Secondary Diversion Route:

  • An alternative path is available via Krupa Residency T Junction, Sharan Status Crossroads, the Bhat-Koteshwar Road, and Apollo Circle.

Extended Restrictions and Exemptions

On certain match dates, traffic restrictions may extend into the early morning hours of the following day to accommodate post-event activities and ensure public safety. However, exemptions are in place for emergency and essential vehicles.

Exempted Vehicles Include:

  1. Ambulances and medical emergency units
  2. Fire brigade vehicles
  3. Police vehicles on official duty
  4. Vehicles directly associated with the cricket matches

Additionally, residents living within the restricted zone will be permitted movement after proper verification by authorities, ensuring minimal inconvenience to local inhabitants.

Strict Enforcement and Penalties

The Ahmedabad police have issued a stern warning that violations of the traffic order will attract strict legal action. This underscores the importance of compliance to maintain order and safety during the high-profile sporting event.

These proactive measures aim to balance the excitement of the T20 World Cup with practical urban management, reflecting the city's commitment to hosting a successful and smoothly run tournament in 2026.
