Mohammad Amir Faces Backlash After India's T20 World Cup Semis Entry Proves Him Wrong
Amir Criticized as India Reaches T20 World Cup Semis

Mohammad Amir's T20 World Cup Prediction Backfires as India Advances to Semifinals

Former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir has faced intense criticism after his bold forecast that India would fail to reach the semifinals of the T20 World Cup 2026 was proven incorrect. India secured their spot in the semifinals by defeating West Indies by five wickets in a crucial Super 8 match, directly contradicting Amir's earlier statement.

Social Media Trolling and Controversial Dismissal Claim

Following India's qualification, Amir was widely mocked on social media platforms. However, the former pacer did not back down entirely, pointing to what he described as a controversial moment in the match that he believes could have altered the outcome. The incident occurred during the 12th over of the West Indies innings when batsman Shimron Hetmyer attempted to slog a delivery from Jasprit Bumrah and was caught behind by wicketkeeper Sanju Samson.

Umpire Chris Gaffaney upheld the appeal immediately, and although Hetmyer opted for a review, replays indicated contact with the bat. Both Hetmyer and the West Indies dugout appeared unconvinced by the decision. Speaking on the Pakistani television show Haarna Mana Hai, Amir expressed his doubts about the dismissal.

"I feel that Hetmyer's dismissal was controversial. I don't think he was out. If he had stayed there a little longer and the score had reached 220–230, India would have been knocked out today," Amir stated, suggesting that the match could have swung in West Indies' favor had the decision gone differently.

Praise for Sanju Samson Amid Criticism of India's Overall Performance

Despite his criticism, Amir acknowledged Sanju Samson's exceptional match-winning knock of 97 runs off 50 balls, describing it as a standout performance. "You said they have proved me wrong. Look, where credit is due, it should be given. Sanju Samson played the best innings of his life. I have seen his knocks in the IPL and other matches, but this innings - and that too in a do-or-die game, a knockout - was special," he remarked.

However, Amir maintained that India's overall performance in the tournament has not been convincing. He highlighted issues with fielding and bowling, arguing that the team is overly reliant on a single player. "But if I analyse it purely from a cricketing point of view, India are not playing good cricket overall. I am still telling you - just check their fielding. They dropped three to four catches and fumbled in the field. Apart from Bumrah, every other bowler is getting hit. India are playing on the strength of just one bowler," the former fast bowler added, emphasizing his skepticism about India's chances moving forward in the competition.

The T20 World Cup 2026 continues to generate significant attention, with fans and analysts closely watching India's progress as they aim for the title. Amir's comments have sparked debate among cricket enthusiasts, reflecting the high stakes and passionate opinions surrounding international cricket tournaments.
