Amritsar's Cricketing Community Celebrates International Stadium Announcement
The recent announcement of an international cricket stadium in Amritsar has sparked widespread enthusiasm among local cricketers, veteran players, coaches, and cricket administrators. This development, revealed during a press conference in Chandigarh on Monday, is being hailed as a significant step forward for sports infrastructure in the region.
Long-Pending Demand Fulfilled
Ravneet Singh Ricky, a former Ranji player from Amritsar, emphasized that this move addresses a long-standing demand of the city's cricketing community. Having represented Punjab for nearly 15 years and played 75 first-class matches between 1997 and 2011, Ricky highlighted the critical role of quality infrastructure in encouraging youth to pursue sports careers.
Ricky, who was adjudged the best batsman with over 300 runs in the 2000 ICC Under-19 World Cup in Sri Lanka, where India triumphed under Mohammad Kaif's leadership, also scored a century against Australia in the semi-final. He noted that leveraging Amritsar's immense cricket popularity could make the proposed stadium a milestone in further popularizing the sport.
Historical Legacy and Recent Achievements
Amritsar boasts a rich cricketing heritage, having produced legendary international players such as Mohinder Amarnath, Bishen Singh Bedi, and Madan Lal. In recent years, talents like Harvinder Singh and Abhishek Sharma have continued to bring recognition to the city, underscoring its potential for nurturing top-tier athletes.
Veteran Perspectives on the Project
Tilak Raj Bhatia, associated with cricket at Gandhi Ground since 1958, described the stadium project as long overdue. Selected for the Punjab cricket team in 1965, when stars like Bedi, Lal, and the Amarnaths frequented the same ground, Bhatia played Ranji Trophy from 1972 to 1978 and represented Punjab veterans until 2003.
He resumed his involvement as an executive member, selector, and coach from 2019 to 2025. Bhatia expressed optimism that the announcement of imminent work lends credibility to the project, especially in an election year, raising hopes for its realization.
Previous Promises and Current Prospects
Earlier, Arvind Kejriwal, the AAP supremo, had announced plans for a world-class cricket stadium in Amritsar during his address on May 27, 2024. Over the past decade, local politicians have repeatedly pledged to upgrade infrastructure at Gandhi Ground—the city's sole cricket venue—to host at least IPL matches, if not international fixtures. However, these promises have largely remained unfulfilled until now.
The renewed focus on this initiative signals a potential turning point, with stakeholders eagerly anticipating tangible progress to bolster Amritsar's sports landscape and inspire future generations of cricketers.
