Kansas City [US], June 16 (ANI): Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni and defender Nicolas Otamendi have underlined the immense value of World Cup-winning captain Lionel Messi as the defending champions prepare to launch their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign against Algeria on Tuesday.

Messi's Enduring Influence

Messi, who reached the pinnacle of football by securing the elusive World Cup title in Qatar in 2022, remains the focal point of Argentina's ambitions. At 38, the veteran forward is aiming for a second consecutive World Cup triumph, potentially in his final appearance on the global stage.

Speaking to reporters, Scaloni emphasized the universal appeal of Messi. "Everyone wants to see him on the pitch," Scaloni said, as quoted by Reuters. "Not only Argentines, we believe everyone wants to see him on the pitch, wants to see him play."

Fitness Concerns Dismissed

Messi missed the friendly against Honduras on June 6, which Argentina won 2-0, but featured as a substitute in their 3-0 victory over Iceland last week, scoring from a penalty. Scaloni dismissed any notion that the 38-year-old could be a liability, asserting that Messi has always been "fundamental" for the team, even amid recent fatigue and fitness challenges.

"He has always been there, and he has always been fundamental for us. And now even more so," the coach added.

Otamendi's Praise

Messi's long-time teammate Otamendi reflected on their shared journey, hailing him as "the best player in history" and a "competitive animal."

"We have lived many beautiful moments together," said the defender. "He is a simple person who enjoys training camps and practices, and prepares himself for that. He is also a competitive animal. That pushes you to keep trying, not to relax, to try to be alongside him, to support him and help him."

World Cup Campaign

Argentina open their World Cup campaign against Algeria on June 16, followed by matches against Austria (June 22) and Jordan (June 28) in Group J. A tournament victory would mark Argentina's fourth World Cup title.
