Ashwin's Strong Appeal to Pant: Open Every Match for LSG in IPL 2026
Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has issued a direct and impassioned appeal to Lucknow Super Giants captain Rishabh Pant, urging him to commit to opening the batting for the entirety of the IPL 2026 season. This call comes amid ongoing debate about Pant's optimal batting position, a topic that has intensified following a mixed performance in the previous edition where consistency eluded him aside from a solitary century.
The Unfortunate Run-Out and Batting Order Shuffle
In LSG's recent clash against Delhi Capitals at the Ekana Cricket Stadium, Pant promoted himself to open the innings, forming a left-right combination with Mitchell Marsh at the top. This strategic move pushed the in-form Aiden Markram down to the number three position. Pant appeared fluent during his brief stay at the crease, notably striking a crisp straight drive off Mukesh Kumar. However, his promising start was abruptly ended by a freak run-out when Marsh's shot deflected onto the stumps at the non-striker's end, catching Pant short of his ground.
Ashwin's Detailed Rationale and Public Request
Reacting to this incident and Pant's subsequent comments, Ashwin expressed strong views on his YouTube channel. He described Pant's dismissal as "very unfortunate" and was particularly concerned by Pant's post-match response when asked about his opening role, where the captain gave a "50-50" answer. Ashwin made a heartfelt plea: "I request you with folded hands, please open in every match. Justin Langer, or whoever is there in the LSG team management, should go and tell Rishabh Pant to go out there and play freely in the powerplay. Go and play the entire 14 games as an opener."
Ashwin elaborated further, explaining the tactical advantage of Pant opening. "If he comes into bat after the powerplay, the bowlers have a strategy to stop him. So, I think he should open the batting, for himself and for LSG as well," he added, emphasizing that batting lower in the order could diminish Pant's match-winning impact.
Pant's Record and Unfinalized Role
Despite Ashwin's compelling argument, Pant's historical record as an opener in the IPL presents a limited sample size. Across six innings at the top, he has scored 132 runs at an average of 22.00 and a strike rate of 128.16, with one half-century to his name. Pant himself indicated that his role for the season is not yet set in stone. After the defeat, he stated, "It's still a 50-50 call, but you'll definitely see me batting in the top order this season."
Reflecting on the run-out and the loss, the wicketkeeper-batter stressed the importance of mental resilience. "The best way to recover is to move on and not dwell on it too much. Certain things are beyond your control, and thinking about them only puts you on the back foot. It's about looking ahead and staying positive," Pant remarked.
Looking Ahead: The Next Challenge
All eyes will now be on Lucknow Super Giants' next fixture against Sunrisers Hyderabad, led by Ishan Kishan, at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on April 5. Pant's batting position in that match will undoubtedly be under intense scrutiny, as the team and its fans await a definitive decision on his role for the crucial IPL 2026 campaign.
