Atharva Ankolekar Misses IPL Debut Due to Knee Injury

Mumbai Spinner Atharva Ankolekar Ruled Out of IPL 2026 After Knee Surgery

In a devastating blow to his burgeoning cricket career, Mumbai's left-arm spinning all-rounder Atharva Ankolekar has been forced to miss what would have been his maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) stint. The Mumbai Indians, who acquired Ankolekar for his base price of Rs 30 lakh at the IPL 2026 auction on December 16 last year, will now have to proceed without their new signing.

Injury Details and Surgical Intervention

The 25-year-old cricketer suffered a meniscus tear during a Ranji Trophy match between Mumbai and Hyderabad at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad in January. While fielding at long-on, Ankolekar injured himself while sliding to prevent a boundary and had to be stretchered off the ground. This injury not only ended his Ranji Trophy season but has now cost him his IPL opportunity.

"Ankolekar's surgery was performed by Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwalla at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai. He has a 'locked knee.' It's just a case of terrible timing. He has lost an opportunity of a lifetime," a source familiar with the situation revealed on Saturday.

Career Trajectory and Recent Achievements

Ankolekar's cricket journey has been marked by several notable achievements:

  • Represented the India Under-19 team in the 2020 U-19 World Cup
  • Played 25 T20 matches, taking 19 wickets at an average of 30.47
  • Scored 135 runs in T20s at a strike rate of 156.97
  • Was a key performer in Mumbai's Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy triumph in the 2024-25 season

In the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy final against Madhya Pradesh in Bengaluru, Ankolekar contributed significantly with three wickets in four matches at an economy rate of 6.33, plus a crucial six-ball 16 not out in Mumbai's thrilling five-wicket victory.

Previous Auction Success and Current Setback

Just last year, on May 7, Ankolekar became the most expensive player in the T20 Mumbai League when the Eagle Thane Strikers purchased him for Rs 16.25 lakh at the auction. This made his IPL acquisition by Mumbai Indians particularly anticipated among cricket enthusiasts.

The timing of this injury represents a significant professional setback for the young all-rounder, who was poised to make his mark on cricket's biggest domestic stage. While his IPL debut is now delayed, medical professionals and team management will focus on his complete recovery and rehabilitation process.
