Australia began their ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 campaign with a commanding 65-run victory over South Africa at Old Trafford on Saturday, powered by Phoebe Litchfield's explosive half-century and a disciplined bowling performance led by Georgia Wareham.
Australia's Innings: Litchfield Leads the Charge
After being asked to bat first, Australia recovered from an early setback to post 172/8 in their allotted 20 overs. The innings got off to a shaky start when opener Georgia Voll was dismissed for a duck by Marizanne Kapp in the first over. Beth Mooney also struggled and fell for seven, leaving Australia under pressure at 15/2.
Phoebe Litchfield then turned the momentum in Australia's favor. She struck a boundary off her first ball and attacked from the outset, helping Australia reach 52/2 at the end of the powerplay. The left-handed batter brought up her fifty in just 23 balls and eventually made 51 off 24 deliveries, smashing nine fours and a six.
South Africa fought back when Ashleigh Gardner was dismissed for one, reducing Australia to 57/4. However, Georgia Wareham and Ellyse Perry added 58 runs for the fifth wicket to stabilize the innings. Wareham made 32 off 22 balls with six boundaries before Nadine de Klerk ended the partnership.
Perry anchored the later stages with a steady 36 off 26 balls, while Annabel Sutherland chipped in with 21 from 14 deliveries to push Australia past the 170-run mark.
South Africa's Bowling and Fielding
South Africa's bowlers shared the wickets evenly. Ayabonga Khaka, Nonkululeko Mlaba, and Nadine de Klerk each picked up two wickets, while captain Laura Wolvaardt impressed in the field with three catches.
South Africa's Chase: Wolvaardt's Lone Fight
Chasing 173 for victory, South Africa's innings started disastrously. Sune Luus was trapped lbw by Sophie Molineux in the first over, and Kim Garth bowled Annerie Dercksen in the next over, leaving the Proteas at 7/2.
Captain Laura Wolvaardt and Nadine de Klerk then repaired the innings with a 41-run partnership. De Klerk scored 25 before Wareham broke the stand soon after the powerplay. Marizanne Kapp briefly counterattacked with 12, but a mix-up between the wickets ended her stay.
Wolvaardt continued to hold one end and reached 44 off 39 balls, but her dismissal to Wareham effectively ended South Africa's hopes. Alana King then removed Sinalo Jafta and Kayla Reyneke in quick succession, while Ashleigh Gardner dismissed Shabnim Ismail. Wareham wrapped up the innings by dismissing Chloe Tryon and Nonkululeko Mlaba.
Bowling Stars
Georgia Wareham finished with impressive figures of 3/13, while Sophie Molineux and Alana King claimed two wickets each as Australia completed a comfortable victory and made a strong start to their campaign.
