Former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar has launched a staunch defence of veteran stars Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, asserting that their place in the country's One-Day International setup should never have been a topic of debate. Bangar believes the duo's monumental contributions over the years warrant "special treatment" and a distinct set of evaluation standards.
Numbers Speak Louder Than Doubts
Bangar's comments come amid cautious discussions within the team management, including head coach Gautam Gambhir and selectors, regarding the seniors' ability to maintain peak form and fitness until the 2027 ICC World Cup. However, the former coach pointed to the overwhelming evidence from the recent ODI series against South Africa to silence the sceptics.
Between them, Kohli and Rohit amassed three centuries and five half-centuries in their last six innings. The 37-year-old Kohli, who was named Player of the Series, scored 135, 102, and an unbeaten 65. Captain Rohit Sharma, 38, contributed vital knocks of 57 and 75, showcasing their undiminished class.
Earned Right for Space and Time
Speaking to JioStar, Bangar emphasised that players of their calibre, who have retired from Test and T20I cricket, naturally require a brief period to readjust to the 50-over format. He argued they have earned the right to this allowance through consistent excellence over a long career.
"They have retired from two formats, so it's obvious they might take just a couple of sessions to get back into action because they have done it so often," Bangar explained. "They don't need to play as many matches as a younger player. Once they are there, once they are hungry and fit, you want players of that quality. You have to treat them differently and give them space."
He stressed that questioning their spot was unwarranted, given their legendary status and proven track record. "I don't think the place of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the team should have been a question. Look at what they have done over so many years," he added.
Leadership and Morale-Boosting Presence
Beyond the runs, Bangar highlighted the intangible value the pair brings to the dressing room. Their sheer presence, he noted, lifts the entire group's atmosphere and confidence.
Reflecting on the recent tour, Bangar, who has also worked with Kohli at Royal Challengers Bengaluru, suggested the experienced duo played a pivotal role in helping the team rebound from a humiliating Test series defeat. "After the humiliating loss in the Test series, they must have spoken to the boys. They helped put things behind and play with freedom and authority, giving the whole team supreme confidence," he said.
Bangar's strong endorsement underscores the ongoing conversation in Indian cricket about managing the transition of its two biggest modern-day icons while leveraging their unmatched skill and experience for as long as possible.
