The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has initiated a significant diplomatic outreach to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), aiming to fortify existing partnerships and investigate fresh avenues for cricketing collaboration between the two neighboring nations. This move signals a potential thaw in relations following a period of notable tension.
BCB Confirms Formal Communication with BCCI
Nazmul Abedin Fahim, the Director of Cricket Operations for the BCB, has officially confirmed this development in a detailed conversation with ANI. He emphasized that such communication between cricket boards is a standard practice essential for maintaining robust international sporting relationships.
"We maintain regular communication with various countries' cricket boards. As part of that regular communication, we recently reached out to the Board of Control for Cricket in India via a letter, through an email, to communicate with them," stated Nazmul Abedin Fahim during the phone interview. "In the letter, we mentioned that the Indian national cricket team is scheduled to come to Bangladesh in September to play a series, and after that, our women's team is supposed to go to India. We also included in the letter a request to explore any other possibilities for reciprocal cricket collaborations," he elaborated further.
Historical Context: The BCB and BCCI Rift
This outreach follows a phase of strained relations between the two cricketing bodies. The friction originated ahead of IPL 2026 when the Kolkata Knight Riders signed Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman. Due to political objections from local groups, the BCCI subsequently ordered KKR to release him, creating discord between the boards.
The situation intensified when Bangladesh made the decision to boycott the T20 World Cup hosted in India, further straining cricketing ties. These events highlighted the complex interplay between sports and politics in the region.
Diplomatic Thaw and Political Improvements
However, diplomatic relations between Bangladesh and India have recently shown promising signs of improvement. Following the February 12 elections, the new government led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has actively taken steps toward strengthening bilateral relations with India.
In a pivotal diplomatic gesture, Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister, Dr. Khalilur Rahman, is scheduled to visit India on April 7 and 8. With political relations on an upward trajectory, cricketing cooperation between the two nations also appears to be back on track, heralding a positive phase for future engagements and mutual benefits.
Upcoming India Tour of Bangladesh: Detailed Schedule
The Indian national cricket team is set to tour Bangladesh in September 2026 for a comprehensive six-match white-ball series. This series will consist of three One Day Internationals (ODIs) and three Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is). Originally planned for August 2025, the tour was postponed due to scheduling conflicts and security concerns.
Following the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s formal proposal to the BCCI, the final schedule is anticipated to be confirmed through mutual agreement between the two boards. The proposed itinerary is as follows:
- September 1: 1st ODI at Mirpur
- September 3: 2nd ODI at Mirpur
- September 6: 3rd ODI at Chattogram
- September 9: 1st T20I at Chattogram
- September 12: 2nd T20I at Mirpur
- September 13: 3rd T20I at Mirpur
This tour represents a crucial step in revitalizing cricketing exchanges and fostering a spirit of sportsmanship between India and Bangladesh. The BCB's proactive communication underscores a commitment to leveraging cricket as a bridge for enhanced bilateral cooperation and regional harmony.
