BCCI Rewards Ajit Agarkar with Contract Extension Following ICC Triumphs
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially extended the contract of Ajit Agarkar, chairman of the men's senior selection committee, by an additional year. This decision was confirmed just before the commencement of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL), marking a significant vote of confidence in Agarkar's leadership.
Recognition for White-Ball Dominance
Agarkar's extension comes as a direct reward for the Indian cricket team's remarkable achievements under his tenure. The Men in Blue secured victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup, successfully defending their title on home soil, and followed it up with a triumph in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. These back-to-back ICC tournament wins have solidified India's position as a powerhouse in limited-overs cricket.
Sources within the BCCI indicate that Agarkar himself formally requested an extension of his tenure until the 2027 ODI World Cup, a little over a week after the T20 World Cup victory. Discussions on this matter are already understood to have taken place at the highest levels of the board.
The Test Cricket Conundrum
Despite the glittering success in white-ball formats, Agarkar's tenure has been shadowed by India's inconsistent performances in Test cricket. The team has faced significant setbacks, including back-to-back series defeats at home and a loss in the away Border-Gavaskar Trophy. This stark contrast has somewhat dimmed the shine of the ICC title victories.
India's record in white-ball cricket under Agarkar's chairmanship is formidable, with only two losses in 33 matches across T20Is and ODIs. The team also clinched the Asia Cup in both 2023 and 2025. However, the Test team's struggles present a critical challenge as India approaches a crucial phase of the World Test Championship and begins preparations for next year's 50-over World Cup.
Transition Phase and Future Uncertainties
The period of Agarkar's leadership has coincided with a major transition across all formats of Indian cricket. Legendary players have stepped back from certain formats:
- Ravichandran Ashwin has retired from all international cricket.
- Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have announced retirements from T20 Internationals, though they continue to play ODIs.
A pressing question remains whether Kohli and Rohit will feature in the 2027 ODI World Cup. Both Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir have maintained a deliberately non-committal stance on this issue.
"Look, they [Rohit and Kohli] are part of the squad at the moment for Australia," Agarkar stated at the NDTV World Summit 2025. "In two years' time, we don't know what the situation is going to be. So why just them two? It could be some other younger players [who might miss out on the tournament]."
BCCI's Dilemma and Internal Dynamics
The BCCI now faces a strategic decision. Agarkar's well-timed contract request, made amidst national euphoria following another ICC title, places the ball firmly in the board's court. The board must decide whether to grant another extension or initiate discussions with potential candidates for the selection committee chairman role.
Strong murmurs within BCCI corridors suggest that another former India cricketer from the West Zone was considered a front-runner to succeed Agarkar, but no concrete developments have occurred on that front. BCCI president Mithun Manhas, secretary Devajit Saikia, and Agarkar himself have not responded to media queries regarding the contract extension and future plans.
Both Agarkar and Gambhir have consistently emphasized the importance of focusing on the present. "It's still a long way away. We'll see how the team shapes up, but we have some ideas, and as we go along we'll probably have a better idea of where the team is progressing," Agarkar added regarding future tournament preparations.
As the selector now appears willing to look ahead to the 2027 World Cup, the cricket world watches with keen interest to see how the BCCI responds and what the future holds for both the selection committee leadership and India's cricketing legends.
