Bengaluru Police Intensifies Safety Preparations with Second Mock Drill Ahead of IPL Season
With the new season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) scheduled to commence this Saturday, the Bengaluru city police conducted a second comprehensive mock drill on Thursday to rigorously evaluate and enhance safety arrangements at the iconic M Chinnaswamy Stadium. This proactive measure comes in response to heightened scrutiny following a tragic stampede during the Royal Challengers Bangalore's title-winning celebrations on June 4, 2025, which resulted in 11 fatalities and raised significant concerns over crowd management and safety preparedness at the venue.
Enhanced Crowd Management Strategies Before the Match
In a bid to prevent overcrowding and ensure a smooth entry process, the police have introduced several innovative measures. For the first time, six designated holding areas within the stadium complex will be operationalized, with an estimated capacity to accommodate between 18,000 and 20,000 spectators. These areas will be utilized to manage fans who arrive at the venue before the gates officially open, thereby mitigating congestion on the surrounding roads and sidewalks.
Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh emphasized, "We are also in active discussions with the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) to potentially open the practice ground inside the complex as an additional holding area, further expanding our capacity to handle early arrivals safely."
Streamlined Exit Procedures and Public Transport Initiatives
Post-match, spectators will benefit from significantly improved exit facilities. The number of exits has been nearly doubled to 45, compared to the previous season, with additional gates strategically opened to guide crowds outside the stadium efficiently and avoid dangerous bottlenecks at traditional exit points.
To alleviate traffic congestion and promote sustainable travel, authorities are strongly urging spectators to maximize the use of public transport. In a supportive move, additional parking facilities have been arranged at 44 major Metro stations across the city, exclusively for holders of valid match tickets. Key high-footfall stations such as Whitefield, Central Silk Board, Electronics City, KR Pura, Madawara, RV Road, Majestic, KSR Bengaluru, Byappanahalli, and Kengeri bus terminal are included in this initiative.
Parking fees at these stations are capped at Rs 60 for four-wheelers and Rs 30 for two-wheelers, with no time restrictions, making it a cost-effective and convenient option. Furthermore, on match days, Metro train services will be extended to operate until 2 AM, with improved frequency to accommodate the late-night crowds.
Comprehensive Security and Emergency Response Deployment
Security measures have been substantially bolstered for the upcoming matches. A total of 2,000 police personnel, including dedicated traffic cops, will be deployed on match days to maintain order and ensure public safety. Strict regulations will be enforced to prevent trespassing, with individuals without valid match tickets being prohibited from loitering around the stadium premises.
Emergency preparedness has also been prioritized, with an increased number of ambulances, fire engines, and on-site medical centers arranged to handle any potential incidents swiftly. Commissioner Singh reiterated the police's commitment, stating, "We have meticulously considered strategies to control the crowd effectively while ensuring that fans can come and enjoy the match in a secure environment."
Designated Pick-up and Drop-off Zones for Enhanced Convenience
To further streamline traffic flow and reduce chaos, specific pick-up and drop-off zones have been established. Cab pick-up points are located at BRV Ground near Gate No. 6, while drop-off points are set at Manekshaw Parade Ground near Gate No. 3, providing clear and organized options for spectators utilizing ride-sharing services or private vehicles.
