Jasprit Bumrah Endures Uncharacteristic Struggles in IPL 2026 Season
Mumbai Indians star pacer Jasprit Bumrah is experiencing a surprising and uncharacteristic lean patch during the ongoing IPL 2026 season. Known globally for his ability to trouble the world's best batters with his lethal pace and precision, Bumrah has found little success this year, with opposing teams taking him apart consistently.
Alarming Statistics Highlight Bumrah's Dip in Form
In five matches played so far, Bumrah has conceded a total of 164 runs without managing to pick up a single wicket. His economy rate stands at 8.63, which is notably higher than his usual standards. The frustration was palpable in a recent match against Punjab Kings, where expectations for a turnaround were high. Instead, Bumrah returned disappointing figures of 0/41, and a viral video captured him visibly angry, hurling the ball after his over.
Irfan Pathan's Analysis Points to Slower Ball Overuse
Former India cricketer Irfan Pathan has closely analyzed Bumrah's dip in form on his YouTube channel, identifying a potential key issue. Pathan highlighted that Bumrah's average speed this season has been around 130 kmph, significantly lower than his typical pace. He attributed this to the excessive use of slower deliveries, which Bumrah has been bowling approximately 44% of the time—meaning almost every second ball is a slower one.
"Wickets from Jasprit Bumrah's bowling are very important," Pathan stated. "There is no major issue with his form, but his average speed this season has been around 130 kmph. He has been using the slower ball about 44 per cent of the time."
Pathan Suggests Simple Adjustments for Improvement
Pathan proposed a straightforward solution to help Bumrah regain his effectiveness. He emphasized that reducing the percentage of slower balls could lead to better results. "If he bowls more fast deliveries and reduces the percentage of slower balls, the results will come. It is a very simple solution," Pathan explained. "Bumrah does not need coaching, but the numbers are showing what is happening."
He further elaborated that by lowering the slower ball usage to around 30-35%, Bumrah could increase his average pace, making his slower deliveries more deceptive and effective. "44 percent slower balls and an average speed below 130 kmph means he needs to increase his pace. Obviously, if you bowl more slow deliveries, your average speed will drop. But if you bring the slower ball percentage down to around 35 percent, your slower balls will become more effective. And if you also get seam and swing, then you can dismiss batters as well," Pathan added.
Mumbai Indians' Struggles Continue in IPL 2026
The team's performance has mirrored Bumrah's struggles, with Mumbai Indians slipping to their fourth consecutive defeat this season. They are currently placed ninth on the points table, facing an uphill battle to qualify for the playoffs. Their next match is scheduled against Gujarat Titans on April 20, where they will be hoping for a turnaround in fortunes.
As the IPL 2026 season progresses, all eyes will be on whether Bumrah can implement Pathan's advice and rediscover his form, potentially lifting Mumbai Indians out of their slump. Fans and analysts alike await his next performance with keen interest.
