Chennai's Chepauk to Host First BBL Match in India

The MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai is set to host the opening match of the Big Bash T20 League (BBL) in the second week of December. This marks a historic first as a foreign franchise league match will take place on Indian soil.

BCCI Approval and Preparations

The Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) received the proposal earlier this year and deferred the final decision to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). A source close to the development confirmed that the BCCI has granted its approval. Five officials from Cricket Australia (CA) visited Chepauk on Monday, coinciding with the IPL match between Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad. They inspected the dressing rooms and other facilities. A CA representative stated, "We are exploring the potential of Chennai in partnership with the Australian Government to drive the India-Australia relationship. We are working closely with our friends in the BCCI to make it happen."

Participating Teams and Players

The opening match is expected to feature defending champions Perth Scorchers and runners-up Sydney Sixers. Both teams boast several top players currently involved in the IPL, including Mitchell Marsh, Finn Allen, Josh Inglis, Cooper Connolly, and Mitchell Starc.
