Kansas City Chiefs Draft Mansoor Delane in Emotional 2026 NFL First Round
Chiefs Draft Mansoor Delane in Emotional 2026 NFL First Round

The Kansas City Chiefs had secret and quiet interest in drafting LSU Tigers cornerback Mansoor Delane throughout the offseason. They had previously moved on from two powerhouse cornerbacks, Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson, who are now with the Los Angeles Rams.

When the 2026 NFL Draft Day arrived, the Chiefs made their first splash by selecting Mansoor Delane as their first-round, sixth overall pick. This moment meant everything to the newest teammate of Patrick Mahomes, as well as to everyone in the front office and coaching staff.

Players wait their entire football lives for that special call. After it finally happened, Delane shared his first goal as a Chiefs player: "I'm going to help that defense. We're going to bring that championship back, coach. I promise." Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid let out a humble, comforting laugh, indicating that the newly drafted player understood what the coach wanted from him.

Kansas City Chiefs Share Heartwarming Exchange with Mansoor Delane

Mansoor Delane was unexpectedly drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2026 NFL Draft. The moment Delane received that call, he was moved to tears. To top it off, defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo called Mansoor Delane his newest defensive festive gift. "Christmas came early for me. We're going to do some special things," Spagnuolo told Mansoor Delane. "I look forward to working with you."

Chiefs owner Clark Hunt told Delane, "We're super excited to have you here in Kansas City. Our staff was super high on you, and as you can tell, we didn't want to take any chance. We wanted to make sure that we got you, so we traded up to get you. Looking forward to seeing you when you get here and getting started as soon as possible."

Cleveland Browns Trade with Chiefs

The Travis Kelce-led Chiefs traded up to the No. 6 spot with the Cleveland Browns to acquire LSU cornerback Mansoor Delane. In exchange, the Browns received the No. 9 overall pick, which they used on offensive tackle Spencer Fano, along with the Nos. 74 and 148 picks.

Browns Trade with New York Giants and Seattle Seahawks

The Cleveland Browns sent their No. 74 pick to the New York Giants to acquire Nos. 105, 145, and a 2027 fourth-round pick. They also sent their No. 148 pick to the Seattle Seahawks to acquire a 2027 fourth-round pick.

Five NFL teams drafted 10 players each: the Pittsburgh Steelers, Buffalo Bills, Jacksonville Jaguars, Las Vegas Raiders, and Cleveland Browns. The Browns selected three offensive linemen, two wide receivers, two tight ends, and a quarterback (Taylen Green as their sixth-round, 182nd overall pick). This adds more competition for Shedeur Sanders, Deshaun Watson, and Dillon Gabriel, as they do not plan to trade their 2025 third-round pick.

While Mansoor Delane had one of the warmest NFL Draft Day calls, there was a player who had a shocking call.

NFL Draft Day Prank Call to Shedeur Sanders

There is something called a Draft-day prank call. Cleveland quarterback Shedeur Sanders was a victim of it last year, as his private number was leaked. He was predicted by everyone to be a high first-round pick. But on Day 2 of the 2025 NFL Draft, he received a call. "It's been a long wait, man," said the caller impersonating New Orleans Saints GM Mickey Loomis. "We're going to take you with our next pick, man, but you're going to have to wait a little bit longer, man. Sorry about that."

It was later discovered that the Draft Day prank call was made by Jax Ulbrich, a small-college football player and the son of Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich. As a result, the NFL issued fines for the breach of confidential information: $250,000 for the Falcons and $100,000 for Jeff Ulbrich, according to FOX Sports NFL reporter Greg Auman.

Shedeur Sanders was drafted in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft as Cleveland's 144th overall pick.
