The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) president, Venkatesh Prasad, has confirmed that the redevelopment of the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium is underway after the venue lost the hosting rights for the Indian Premier League (IPL) final. The decision to shift the final was made by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) due to concerns over the stadium's outdated facilities and infrastructure.
Redevelopment Plans Unveiled
Prasad stated that the KSCA has initiated a comprehensive redevelopment project aimed at modernizing the stadium to meet international standards. The plan includes upgrading seating capacity, improving drainage systems, enhancing hospitality areas, and installing state-of-the-art lighting and broadcasting facilities. The project is expected to be completed in phases over the next two years.
Reasons for the Shift
The BCCI's decision to move the IPL final from Bengaluru came after several complaints from teams and officials regarding the Chinnaswamy Stadium's aging infrastructure. Issues such as inadequate dressing rooms, poor spectator amenities, and outdated media facilities were cited as primary reasons. The final was instead hosted at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Prasad acknowledged the shortcomings and emphasized that the redevelopment would address all concerns. 'We are committed to bringing the Chinnaswamy Stadium back to its glory days. The work has already begun, and we are confident that the upgraded facility will host major events in the future,' he said.
Timeline and Investment
The redevelopment project involves an investment of approximately INR 200 crore. The first phase, focusing on seating and drainage, is slated for completion by the end of 2024. Subsequent phases will cover hospitality, media boxes, and parking facilities. The KSCA is also exploring partnerships with private firms to expedite the process.
Impact on Local Cricket
While the redevelopment is underway, the Chinnaswamy Stadium will continue to host domestic matches and smaller events. However, international fixtures and IPL games may be temporarily shifted to other venues in Karnataka, such as the M. S. Dhoni Stadium in Belgaum. Prasad assured that the disruption would be minimal and that the long-term benefits would outweigh the temporary inconveniences.
The KSCA president also expressed gratitude to the BCCI for its support and understanding. 'We thank the BCCI for giving us this opportunity to revamp our stadium. We are determined to make Chinnaswamy a world-class venue once again,' he added.
The redevelopment of Chinnaswamy Stadium is seen as a crucial step for Karnataka cricket, which has a rich history of producing legendary players. The upgraded facilities are expected to boost the state's chances of hosting future IPL finals and international tournaments.
