Aakash Chopra Backs Virat Kohli for Standout IPL 2026 Performance
As the 19th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) kicks off this Saturday with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) facing Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Bengaluru, all eyes are on cricket legends Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma. These iconic players are poised to demonstrate their enduring prowess in what promises to be a thrilling season.
Chopra's Analysis: Kohli's Fitness and Batting Position Give Him the Edge
Speaking exclusively on JioStar, former Indian cricketer and renowned broadcaster Aakash Chopra shared his insights on the trio's prospects. He singled out Virat Kohli as the player most likely to have an exceptional season, attributing this prediction to Kohli's remarkable fitness levels and his role as an opener for RCB.
"The focus will be on Virat Kohli again because the guy is so fit," Chopra emphasized. "The kind of fitness that he has achieved over a period of time makes him the best suited, also because he is an opener. The same is true for Rohit Sharma as well, but between the two of them, I still feel Virat Kohli has it a little easier just because of himself. That is the price he has to pay for the kind of fitness and legacy he has built."
At 37 years old, Kohli's credentials are unparalleled in IPL history. He holds the record as the all-time leading run-scorer with 8,661 runs across 267 matches. Since joining RCB in 2008, he has set benchmarks including the most runs in a single season (973 in 2016) and the most centuries (8) in the tournament.
Challenges for Dhoni and Sharma in IPL 2026
Chopra also addressed the unique challenges facing MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma. For Dhoni, who is over 40 and has not played competitive cricket for more than 10 months, the demands are particularly steep.
"It is a little difficult for Dhoni as well because he is on the wrong side of 40," Chopra noted. "For him, not to play anything for 10 months, turn up for the IPL and switch on, and also play at a number where he gets only 10-12 balls, is the toughest thing to do. Then there are also 20 overs of keeping, so his job is perhaps the toughest."
Regarding Rohit Sharma, Chopra highlighted the aggressive batting style expected from the Mumbai Indians captain. "When you are part of the batting order that the Mumbai Indians have, it is mandatory to set the tone for Rohit Sharma," he explained. "Rohit does want to bat a certain way. He has already made his opinion very public. But if you are part of a setup where there is Quinton de Kock at the other end, followed by Tilak, Surya, Hardik, Will Jacks or Sherfane Rutherford, and then Naman Dhir, what else is the option? You need to maximise the 20 overs, which basically means maximising the first six overs."
Chopra concluded that Sharma will likely continue this approach unless pitch conditions dictate otherwise, underscoring the strategic pressures in T20 cricket.
Season Opener and Broader Implications
The IPL 2026 season opener between RCB and SRH in Bengaluru sets the stage for these narratives to unfold. With Kohli aiming to build on his legendary status, Dhoni battling age and inactivity, and Sharma leading a powerhouse lineup, fans can anticipate high-stakes performances.
Chopra's analysis not only forecasts individual successes but also reflects on the evolving dynamics of cricket, where fitness, position, and team strategy intertwine to shape outcomes. As the tournament progresses, his predictions will be tested, adding an extra layer of excitement to what is already one of the world's most-watched sporting events.
