Cricket Ireland Aims to Launch Euro Nations Cup in 2027
Cricket Ireland is setting its sights on introducing a new tournament called the "Euro Nations Cup," with Chair Brian MacNeice expressing confidence that the event could debut as early as 2027. According to reports from ESPNcricinfo, this initiative is designed to boost the profile of cricket across Europe, mirroring the structure of established competitions like the Asia Cup.
Tournament Format and Participating Teams
The proposed Euro Nations Cup is expected to feature European cricket teams, including England, Ireland, Scotland, the Netherlands, and Italy. The tournament will most likely adopt the T20 format, ensuring fast-paced and exciting matches for fans. Notably, the event will include both men's and women's fixtures, promoting gender equality in the sport and providing a platform for female cricketers to showcase their talents on an international stage.
Brian MacNeice, while launching Ireland's home international fixtures for 2026, shared his enthusiasm for the project. "I've had this on the table for discussion with various stakeholders for quite some time," he said. "It's something that I'm very passionate about and that I fundamentally believe in." He added that discussions have progressed significantly, increasing his confidence that the tournament will materialize. "The conversations have now developed and evolved to a point that I'm much more confident that it is going to happen," MacNeice stated.
Broadcast and Stakeholder Engagement
MacNeice highlighted that multiple stakeholders are involved in the planning process, with ongoing discussions to finalize details. "There's multiple stakeholders that will be part of that in due course, but I would anticipate that it will kick off in the summer of '27, and the precise format and detail of it will be announced in due course - I would expect in the next couple of months," he explained. Regarding broadcast arrangements, he noted that while it is early to confirm specifics, there is anticipated interest from broadcasters. "To be clear from the outset, that's a men's and women's event. It's a little bit early from a broadcaster perspective to be going out until it's all locked in, but we anticipate that there will be broadcast appetite for it," MacNeice said.
Ireland's Packed Home Schedule for 2026
In related news, Cricket Ireland has announced a busy home schedule for its men's and women's teams in 2026. The season will commence with the men's team hosting New Zealand, the 2021 ICC World Test Champions, in Belfast from May 27 to 30. Following this, Ireland will play a two-match T20I series against India from June 26 to 28. Additionally, from August 5 to 14, Ireland will host Afghanistan for a series of five ODIs.
On the women's front, the team is preparing for the fourth edition of the ICC Women's Championship. As part of this cycle, Ireland will host India, New Zealand, Pakistan, and the West Indies at home, while embarking on away tours to England, Australia, Zimbabwe, and Sri Lanka. The schedule kicks off with a home series against the West Indies in July, followed by tours to England in September and Zimbabwe in early 2027.
Upcoming International Competitions
Ireland's women's team is also set to participate in the ICC Women's T20 World Cup, which will be held in England and Wales this summer, starting from June 12. Ireland has been placed in Group B, where they will compete against England, defending champions New Zealand, Scotland, Sri Lanka, and the West Indies. This tournament provides an excellent opportunity for the team to gain valuable experience and build momentum ahead of the proposed Euro Nations Cup.
The launch of the Euro Nations Cup represents a significant step forward for European cricket, aiming to foster regional competition and enhance the sport's visibility. With detailed plans expected to be unveiled in the coming months, cricket enthusiasts across the continent eagerly await further announcements.
