Cricketer's Wife Files Third Legal Complaint in Kanpur Over Domestic Violence and Dowry Demands

The wife of a prominent cricketer has escalated her legal battle by filing a third complaint in a Kanpur court on Monday, alleging severe domestic violence and dowry harassment. This latest case adds to two previous filings, highlighting ongoing tensions in the marriage.

Details of the Legal Cases and Allegations

According to the complainant's counsel, the first case was registered on April 21, 2025, focusing on domestic violence. A second case sought maintenance of Rs 50,000 and damages amounting to Rs 1 crore. The third complaint, filed in the court of the additional civil judge (second), Kanpur Nagar, invokes Section 210(i)(a) of the BNSS, addressing dowry-related offenses.

The woman alleges that she married the cricketer on April 26, 2021, and her parents spent a substantial amount on the wedding. However, she claims her husband and in-laws demanded a car and Rs 10 lakh in cash as dowry. She further states that the 'bidai' ceremony was performed only after Rs 2.5 lakh in cash was paid, indicating early pressure for dowry.

Allegations of Abuse and Mental Torture

Post-marriage, the complainant alleges she was pressured to bring the car and cash from her parental home. She accuses her husband of assaulting her after consuming liquor and forcing physical relations even when she was ill. Additionally, she claims her in-laws kept her hungry for long periods, leading to depression and adversely affecting her career. She has also accused them of abetting suicide, adding to the gravity of the allegations.

The counsel noted that his client initially approached the police to lodge an FIR, but it was not registered. This led her to file a complaint directly in court against her husband. The court has scheduled March 27 for recording the complainant's statement under the provisions of the BNSS, marking a critical step in the legal proceedings.

This case underscores the serious issues of domestic violence and dowry harassment in India, particularly involving high-profile individuals. The legal system's response will be closely watched as the wife seeks justice for the alleged abuses.
