CSK Captain Gaikwad Admits Middle Overs Slip in 10-Run Loss to SRH in IPL 2026
CSK's Ruturaj Gaikwad Blames Middle Overs for Loss to SRH

CSK Captain Gaikwad Points to Middle Overs Collapse in IPL 2026 Defeat

Chennai Super Kings skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad has openly admitted that his team let the game slip away during the middle overs, resulting in a narrow 10-run loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2026 season. Despite being well-positioned in the chase, CSK failed to maintain their momentum at a critical juncture, ultimately falling short of the target.

Gaikwad's Analysis of the Match Dynamics

Reflecting on the match, Gaikwad explained that based on Sunrisers Hyderabad's explosive start, he had anticipated a total around 220-230 runs. Therefore, restricting SRH to under 200 felt like a significant achievement for the CSK bowling unit. "Looking at how their power play went, I was expecting a score around 220-230. To pull it back by 30 runs, I would have taken it any day under 200," Gaikwad stated.

However, the chase derailed after the 10-over mark when CSK managed to score just four runs in two overs, allowing immense pressure to build. "It was just about 80 runs needed in 10 overs. From there, it was crucial to build a couple of partnerships. We scored only 4 runs in the next 2 overs after the 10-over mark. Chasing 12-13 runs per over at the death is always going to be difficult," he added, highlighting the turning point of the game.

SRH's Batting and CSK's Bowling Efforts

Batting first, Sunrisers Hyderabad posted a competitive total of 194/9, thanks to quickfire half-centuries from Abhishek Sharma and Heinrich Klaasen. The CSK bowlers, including standout performer Anshul Kamboj, executed their plans effectively to keep the score in check, showcasing disciplined line and length throughout the innings.

In reply, Chennai Super Kings received promising starts from Ayush Mhatre, Matthew Short, and Sarfaraz Khan, but consistent wicket losses hampered their progress. SRH bowlers such as Eshan Malinga and Nitish Kumar Reddy took control in the later stages, applying pressure and sealing the victory for their team.

Praise for the Bowling Unit and Kamboj's Confidence

Despite the disappointing loss, Gaikwad praised his bowling unit for their consistent performances. "It's been three successive games that the bowling unit has been doing really well. Even in the power play today, I thought Abhishek played brilliantly, but overall, everyone did a good job with the ball," he remarked.

He specifically highlighted Anshul Kamboj's growing confidence and dedication. "He is working really hard on his bowling, especially his death bowling. Very rarely do you encounter bowlers who have such clarity and can tell the captain, 'I know what to do, this is what I am going to do,'" Gaikwad emphasized, underscoring Kamboj's proactive approach and mental strength.

This match underscores the fine margins in T20 cricket, where middle-over phases can decisively influence outcomes. CSK will look to address these issues as they aim to bounce back in the ongoing IPL 2026 season.
