Dasun Shanaka Joins Rajasthan Royals as Replacement for Injured Sam Curran in IPL 2026
In a significant development for the upcoming Indian Premier League season, Sri Lanka's T20I captain Dasun Shanaka has been officially confirmed as the replacement for the injured England all-rounder Sam Curran at Rajasthan Royals. The announcement was made on Monday, with Shanaka set to join the franchise for a sum of Rs 2 crore, bolstering the team's lineup ahead of IPL 2026.
Shanaka's Cricket Career and IPL History
Dasun Shanaka, aged 34, brings a wealth of international experience to the Rajasthan Royals squad. According to an official IPL release, he has represented Sri Lanka in 6 Test matches, 71 One Day Internationals, and 131 T20 Internationals. His career statistics are impressive, with over 3,350 international runs and 86 wickets across all formats. Shanaka previously made a brief appearance in the IPL during the 2023 season, playing three matches for the Gujarat Titans.
Team Management's Perspective on the Replacement
Rajasthan Royals head coach and team director Kumar Sangakkara expressed mixed emotions regarding the change. "We are disappointed to lose a player of Sam's calibre so close to the start of the season," Sangakkara stated. "Sam brings immense value with both bat and ball. However, we are pleased to have found an ideal replacement in Dasun Shanaka, a finisher with the bat and a quality all-rounder who helps maintain the balance of our side." The franchise further highlighted Shanaka's attributes, noting that he adds vast experience and composure to the Royals' lower-middle order, having been a consistent performer for Sri Lanka in T20 Internationals.
Shanaka's Move from Pakistan Super League to IPL
This transfer marks a notable shift for Shanaka, as he becomes the second international player, following Zimbabwe's Blessing Muzarabani, to leave the Pakistan Super League for an opportunity in the Indian Premier League. After going unsold in the IPL auction, Shanaka was initially picked up by the Lahore Qalandars in the PSL. His move to Rajasthan Royals underscores the dynamic nature of player movements in global T20 leagues.
Rajasthan Royals' Upcoming Fixtures
Rajasthan Royals are scheduled to kick off their IPL 2026 campaign with a home game against Chennai Super Kings in Guwahati on March 30. The addition of Dasun Shanaka is expected to strengthen their squad as they aim for a successful season in one of cricket's most prestigious tournaments.
