Deepti Sharma on Rs 3.2 Cr WPL Retention: 'No Pressure, Only Motivation'
Deepti Sharma: No pressure from Rs 3.2 Cr WPL retention

Star Indian all-rounder Deepti Sharma has stated that her high-value retention by the UP Warriorz for the upcoming Women's Premier League (WPL) season does not bring pressure, but instead serves as a major source of motivation. Sharma was retained by the franchise for a significant sum of Rs 3.2 crore ahead of the fourth edition of the tournament.

The Right to Match Retention

In an interesting turn of events, the Player of the Tournament from India's Women's ODI World Cup campaign was initially released by the UP Warriorz ahead of the WPL mega auction. However, the franchise utilized its Right to Match (RTM) card to secure her services once again. Speaking at the sidelines of the CII Big Picture Summit, Sharma expressed her delight at returning to her home state's team.

"Of course, they (family) liked it a lot and they were very happy," Sharma said about her family's reaction. "They are waiting for the WPL to start... they were very happy because I am from UP and that I would go back to the UP team and get another opportunity to play there."

Motivation Over Pressure

Addressing the expectations that come with a hefty price tag, the 27-year-old cricketer clarified her mindset. She emphasized that the high bid and the accompanying attention fuel her performance rather than weigh her down.

"There is no pressure, but there is definitely motivation because when there is a high bid on you and so many people are watching and following you and you do well for your franchise," Sharma explained. "I don't take it as any pressure. I look to enjoy. I like to deliver in tough moments for my team and enjoy it as well."

She also praised the supportive environment within the UP Warriorz setup, highlighting the trust shown by the team management and owners.

World Cup Focus on Strike Rate and Shots

Reflecting on her stellar performance in the recent Women's ODI World Cup, where she claimed 22 wickets, including a five-wicket haul, and scored a vital 55 in the final against South Africa, Sharma revealed her specific preparatory focus.

"Before going into the World Cup, I focused a lot on my shots and especially on my natural game. The more naturally I can play, the better it will be for the team," she stated.

Sharma worked intensively on expanding her shot-making repertoire and improving her strike rate. "If you can hit one ball in three different ways, it is better. I worked a lot on my strike rate and on how I can get more runs for the team," she added, outlining the approach that made her one of the tournament's standout players.

With the WPL season on the horizon, Deepti Sharma's combination of proven all-round skill, a motivated mindset, and the support of her home franchise sets the stage for another impactful campaign.
