Fakhar Zaman Faces Two-Match Suspension Over Ball Tampering Allegations in PSL
In a significant development, veteran Pakistan batter Fakhar Zaman has been handed a two-match suspension by the Pakistan Cricket Board for allegedly altering the condition of the ball during a Pakistan Super League match. The incident occurred during Lahore Qalandars' clash against Karachi Kings on Sunday, leading to a Level 3 offence charge under Article 2.14 of the PSL Code of Conduct.
Details of the Controversial Incident
The controversy unfolded moments before the final over of Karachi Kings' innings. On-field umpires Shahid Saikat and Faisal Khan Aafreedi, along with TV umpire Asif Yaqoob and fourth umpire Tariq Rasheed, reported the suspected tampering. As a result, Lahore Qalandars were penalized five runs, and the ball was replaced immediately. Despite the allegations, Fakhar Zaman has strongly denied any involvement in wrongdoing, challenging the suspension through a formal disciplinary hearing.
Disciplinary Hearing and Team Involvement
Match referee Roshan Mahanama oversaw the full disciplinary hearing, where Fakhar Zaman presented his case in person. The proceedings were attended by Lahore Qalandars captain Shaheen Shah Afridi, team director Sameen Rana, and team manager Farooq Anwar. After examining all available evidence, Mahanama upheld the two-match suspension, confirming the PCB's decision. This adds to a series of disciplinary issues plaguing the franchise early in the PSL season.
Broader Turmoil for Lahore Qalandars
Off the field, Lahore Qalandars are grappling with additional challenges. Captain Shaheen Shah Afridi has been fined one million rupees for violating the PSL's security protocol at the team hotel in Lahore. In a separate incident, fast bowler Naseem Shah received a hefty 20 million rupee fine from the PCB's disciplinary committee over a controversial tweet that breached his central contract conditions. These events compound the team's difficulties as they prepare for upcoming matches.
Upcoming Fixtures and Season Outlook
Lahore Qalandars are scheduled to face Multan Sultans on April 3 at the Gaddafi Stadium, followed by a match against Islamabad United on April 9 in Karachi. With multiple on-field and off-field incidents unfolding rapidly, the franchise must navigate these challenges to maintain focus and performance in the competitive PSL environment. The suspension of Fakhar Zaman and the fines imposed on key players highlight the need for stricter adherence to league regulations.
