Rwanda's Fanny Utagushimaninde Creates Cricket History with T20I Debut Century
In a landmark achievement for women's cricket, Rwanda's Fanny Utagushimaninde has etched her name into the record books by becoming the first woman to score a century on her T20 International debut. This historic feat occurred during the Nigeria Invitational Women's T20I Tournament, where she delivered a stunning unbeaten knock of 111 runs off just 65 balls against Ghana at the Tafawa Balewa Square Cricket Oval in Lagos on Friday.
A Record-Breaking Innings at a Tender Age
At the remarkably young age of 15 years and 223 days, Utagushimaninde not only achieved this debut milestone but also set a new record as the youngest player to score a century in women's T20 internationals. Her innings was a masterclass in aggressive batting, featuring 17 boundaries that dismantled the Ghanaian bowling attack. This performance shattered the previous record for the highest score on a woman's T20I debut, held by Australia's Karen Rolton with an unbeaten 96 against England in 2005.
Additionally, she surpassed the youngest centurion record previously held by Uganda's Prosscovia Alako, who was 16 years and 233 days old when she scored 116 against Mali in 2019. Utagushimaninde's achievement highlights her prodigious talent and marks a significant moment for Rwandan cricket on the global stage.
Dominant Team Performance Leads to Commanding Victory
Supported by a late cameo from Merveille Uwase, who scored 32 not out off 19 balls, Rwanda posted a formidable total of 210 for 3 in their allotted 20 overs after winning the toss and electing to bat. The openers provided a blistering start, setting the tone for a high-scoring innings. Ghana's bowlers, including Grace Quaicoe, Miriam Eshun, and Ernestina Sagoe, each managed to take one wicket but struggled to contain the rampant Rwandan batters.
In response, Ghana faced a daunting target of 211 and never found their rhythm against Rwanda's disciplined bowling attack. Kate Awuah offered some resistance with 31 runs off 56 balls, but Ghana was eventually restricted to 88 for 8 in 20 overs, falling well short by 122 runs. Rwanda's Belyse Murekatete led the bowling charge with impressive figures of 3 for 20 in her four overs, ensuring a comprehensive victory for her team.
Implications for Women's Cricket in Africa
This historic match underscores the growing competitiveness and talent in women's cricket across Africa. Utagushimaninde's record-breaking debut is likely to inspire young cricketers in Rwanda and beyond, showcasing the potential for emerging nations to make their mark in international sports. The Nigeria Invitational Women's T20I Tournament serves as a crucial platform for such talents to shine, promoting the development of the game in the region.
