FC Goa Coach Manolo Marquez Dismisses Relegation Concerns, Highlights Unbeaten Run
In a recent press interaction, FC Goa coach Manolo Marquez appeared genuinely taken aback when a reporter raised the possibility of his team facing relegation from the Indian Super League (ISL) this season. The experienced Spanish tactician initially questioned the premise, asking, "For us?" before firmly addressing the repeated query.
Confident Response to Relegation Question
Marquez provided a definitive answer, stating, "Even if we don't get one single point, we won't be the last team in the league. The last team won't get nine points. We are not worried if we will be champions or in the last part of the table." This statement underscores his confidence in FC Goa's position and overall performance capabilities within the competitive ISL landscape.
Analyzing FC Goa's Current Season Performance
After completing five matches, FC Goa remains one of only two unbeaten teams in the league, alongside current leaders Mumbai City. However, their victories have come against lower-ranked opponents Mohammedan Sporting and SC Delhi. The team has drawn matches against Inter Kashi (1-1), East Bengal (0-0), and most recently Punjab FC (1-1).
Reflecting on this record, Marquez told reporters, "I think we need to be satisfied because it's not easy for us to play, to be unbeaten after five games. We know that in the league, there will be good games, bad games, normal games. Our last game was a bad one, but the best thing is that we are still unbeaten."
Critical Assessment of Recent Draw Against Punjab FC
The 1-1 draw with Punjab FC at home left a particularly bitter taste, according to the coach. Marquez admitted that his team created only "half a chance, a freekick" during the first half. Even after Punjab was reduced to ten men early in the second half and Goa managed an equalizer, the coach felt his team failed to sufficiently pressure the hosts or "make them uncomfortable."
Despite this disappointment, Marquez remains unwavering in his belief in the squad's quality. "For me it's about level or mentality. And we have good level. Then you know my answer," he asserted, reinforcing his confidence in both the technical ability and psychological strength of his players.
Upcoming Challenge and Season Philosophy
FC Goa now faces a crucial opportunity to demonstrate their top-tier credentials with an away match against Chennaiyin FC on Sunday. A positive result could bring them within two points of league leaders Mumbai City, who recently handed favorites Mohun Bagan Super Giant their first loss of the season.
Marquez emphasized his broader philosophy for the season, noting that while the team has already secured an Asian slot for next season, "we have to take advantage of these 13 games and improve. That's my target, more than winning or losing." He added that he expects players to show their understanding of the game and avoid repeating mistakes.
Coaching Approach and Squad Dynamics
The Spanish coach elaborated on his management style, explaining, "My philosophy has remained the same. When you start a season, the important players are from 12 to 24. If they train in a good way, we will have a good season. The starters need to be pushed. If it's easy for the starters, usually the performance dips."
Marquez concluded by praising his squad's composition and attitude, stating, "I expect more from some players, but we have a very nice group, a good group, with good attitude." This holistic approach to squad management and development appears central to FC Goa's strategy as they navigate the remainder of the ISL season with both confidence and purpose.
