FIFA Grants Approval for AIFF Election Postponement to December 2026
In a significant development for Indian football administration, FIFA, the global governing body for football, has formally communicated that it has "no objection" to the All India Football Federation (AIFF) postponing its elections from September to December 2026. This decision is aimed at ensuring the AIFF's constitution fully complies with India's newly enacted National Sports Governance Act 2025 and its accompanying regulations.
Background on the Election Timeline and Legal Requirements
AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey was elected on September 2, 2022, for a standard four-year term, with elections originally scheduled before the term's conclusion. However, with the National Sports Governance Act 2025 coming into effect, the AIFF informed relevant governing bodies that it requires an extension to remain in office until later this year. This move is intended to "ensure uninterrupted administration of football in India," according to federation statements.
The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports issued a crucial notice on December 22, 2025, acknowledging that the structural changes necessary for all national sports federations to align with the NSGA are foundational in nature. To facilitate this compliance, the ministry granted a one-time extension to federations with elections due in the current calendar year, permitting them to conduct elections by December 31, 2026.
Official Communications and FIFA's Supportive Stance
In a letter sent last month to FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), AIFF Deputy Secretary General M Satyanarayan detailed the federation's request for the postponement, citing the ministry's extension allowance. FIFA responded positively, with Emile Doms, Member Associations Governance Services Manager at FIFA, writing to the AIFF last week to confirm the organization's "no objection" stance.
Doms reiterated FIFA's willingness to support the AIFF throughout this process and to collaborate closely. He requested that the AIFF keep FIFA and the AFC informed of any further steps in amending its constitution, specifically asking for a document outlining key amendments, necessary steps, and tentative timelines to ensure full compliance with the NSGA.
AIFF's Internal Deadlines and Governance Standards
Simultaneously, the AIFF has directed its member associations to complete the adoption of amendments to their constitutional documents on or before June 30, 2026. This internal deadline is part of a broader effort to standardize governance across Indian football.
The federation emphasized that governance principles and constitutional positions reflected in state association constitutions should extend to affiliated units, such as district associations, where applicable. This measure aims to ensure consistency of governance standards across all levels of football administration in India, from national to local tiers.
The postponement and compliance efforts underscore a pivotal moment in Indian sports governance, as federations adapt to new legal frameworks while maintaining operational continuity in football administration.
