Gambhir Honors Dravid and Laxman After India's Historic T20 World Cup Defense
Gautam Gambhir, the head coach of the Indian national cricket team, has dedicated India's successful defense of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup title to former Indian cricket legends Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman. This heartfelt tribute came after India defeated the New Zealand national cricket team by a commanding 96 runs in the tournament final.
India Creates History with Third T20 World Cup Triumph
With this monumental victory, India has etched its name in cricket history by becoming the first team to win three T20 World Cup titles, having previously triumphed in 2007, 2024, and now 2026. Furthermore, India achieved two additional historic firsts: they are the first team to successfully defend the T20 World Cup title and the first to win it on their home soil, marking a truly special achievement for the nation.
Despite the magnitude of this accomplishment, Gambhir took a moment to reflect on the foundational contributions of Rahul Dravid, who coached India during their 2024 T20 World Cup victory, and VVS Laxman, who currently serves as the head of the BCCI Centre of Excellence.
"I would dedicate this trophy to Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman. To Rahul bhai for putting the Indian team in a strong position and to Laxman for creating a robust talent pipeline at the Centre of Excellence," Gambhir stated emphatically.
Gambhir Extends Gratitude to Key Cricket Administrators
The head coach also expressed his sincere appreciation for chief selector Ajit Agarkar and Jay Shah, the chairman of the International Cricket Council and former secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India. Gambhir highlighted their unwavering support during challenging periods.
"Ajit Agarkar, who faced significant criticism yet worked with immense honesty and dedication. And to Jay bhai. During my lowest moments in my tenure, after losses to New Zealand and then South Africa in the home Test series of 2024 and 2025, he reached out to me with crucial support," Gambhir noted, underscoring the importance of strong administrative backing.
Dominant Performance in the Final
In the championship match, India delivered a spectacular all-round performance. Batting first, they posted an imposing total of 255 for 5, showcasing their explosive batting prowess. The bowlers then rose to the occasion, dismissing New Zealand for a mere 159 runs to secure a comprehensive and comfortable victory.
Praise for Captain Suryakumar Yadav
Gambhir also reserved special praise for captain Suryakumar Yadav, lauding his leadership and collaborative approach throughout the tournament. He emphasized Yadav's role in fostering a team-first mentality.
"Surya made my job considerably easier. He has been a leader who acts as a father figure to the team. The bigger purpose is to celebrate team trophies, not individual milestones. For too many years, we have focused on celebrating personal achievements. I urge everyone to shift their focus and stop celebrating personal milestones," Gambhir added, advocating for a collective celebration of team success over individual accolades.
This victory not only cements India's dominance in T20 cricket but also highlights the strong leadership and foundational work of past and present cricketing figures, as acknowledged by Coach Gambhir in his poignant dedication.
