Shubman Gill Demands Nehra-Like Aggression from Gujarat Titans Fast Bowlers
Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill has set a clear expectation for his pace attack ahead of the IPL 2026 season: emulate the fiery intensity and relentless aggression displayed by former India pacer and current head coach Ashish Nehra during his playing days. In a recent interaction, Gill emphasized that he does not want calm or composed bowlers but rather fierce competitors who mirror Nehra's passionate on-field demeanor.
Ashish Nehra's Legendary Aggression as a Benchmark
Ashish Nehra, known for his explosive pace and unwavering passion, never shied away from expressing his emotions on the cricket field. He often shouted instructions and, at times, even used strong language when fielders misfielded or dropped catches, keeping everyone on their toes. His old bowling clips remain immensely popular among fans, showcasing his loud, commanding presence that motivated teammates and intimidated opponents.
One particularly memorable incident involved Nehra losing his temper at MS Dhoni during an ODI against Pakistan in 2005. After inducing an edge from Shahid Afridi, Nehra was visibly furious when Dhoni failed to hold onto the catch behind the stumps, highlighting his uncompromising standards and competitive spirit.
Gill's Vision for Gujarat Titans' Pace Attack in IPL 2026
Speaking with host Mandira Bedi, Shubman Gill elaborated on his desire for the Titans' fast bowlers to channel Nehra's aggression. "I do not want my fast bowlers to be calm. I want them to be fierce just like Ashu Pa was. I'm sure you must have seen videos of how Ashu Pa acknowledged dropped catches when he was playing," Gill stated, using the affectionate nickname for Nehra.
The Gujarat Titans boast a formidable pace arsenal for the upcoming season, including:
- Kagiso Rabada
- Mohammed Siraj
- Ishant Sharma
- Luke Wood
- Prasidh Krishna
- Ashok Sharma
- Jason Holder
Notably, Prasidh Krishna was the Purple Cap holder in IPL 2025 with 25 wickets in 19 matches, demonstrating the potential within the squad. Gill believes that infusing Nehra-like aggression could elevate their performance further, helping the team build on past successes.
Building on Gujarat Titans' IPL Legacy and Recent Performance
The Gujarat Titans have a strong track record in the IPL, having won their maiden title in 2022 under Hardik Pandya's captaincy. Last season, they reached the Eliminator but fell short, losing to Mumbai Indians by 20 runs. Despite not clinching the trophy, Gill remains confident about a turnaround in IPL 2026.
"Even last year, we had a very successful season. We did not win the trophy, but that does not take away from the brand of cricket we played. We are now here to rectify the mistakes we made last season. We did fall short in some of the things," he added, underscoring the team's commitment to improvement and resilience.
By urging his fast bowlers to adopt Ashish Nehra's aggressive approach, Shubman Gill aims to instill a winning mentality and enhance the Gujarat Titans' competitiveness in the high-stakes environment of IPL 2026.
