Gukesh Triumphs Over Sindarov in GCT Rapid Round
World champion D Gukesh showcased a rare display of emotion after defeating challenger Javokhir Sindarov in the fifth round of the rapid section at the GCT Rapid & Blitz tournament in Poland on Wednesday. The game, which featured a variation of the Caro-Kann defense, saw Gukesh outplay his opponent in the endgame, sealing the win with a fist pump that he later described as a gesture "for myself."
A Significant Matchup
The encounter carried added significance as Sindarov is expected to challenge Gukesh for the World title later this year. The 19-year-old Sindarov, who has slipped outside the top 15 in world rankings, had suffered a heavy loss against Radoslav Wojtaszek in the previous round. Gukesh acknowledged the context but emphasized the differences between rapid and classical formats. "It's a rapid (25+10) game," Gukesh told the official broadcast. "Obviously not as deep as classical. The match will be a different experience. But when you play a game like this, there is always something running behind."
Gukesh's Focus and Emotions
Reflecting on his mindset during the game, Gukesh said he was trying to stay focused. "When I played against Ding Liren before the match in 2024, there was always something going on. It is a nice feeling to win. The fist pump was for myself. I felt really good. And in the heat of the moment, I did something (smiles)." The win earned Gukesh two points in the rapid section, a crucial result in the tournament standings.
In contrast to the intense battle, Gukesh's next round against Wesley So ended in a quick draw after just 14 moves due to three-fold repetition, a peaceful outcome after the earlier drama.
The GCT Rapid & Blitz tournament continues to provide thrilling chess action, with Gukesh demonstrating both his strategic prowess and emotional depth under pressure.
