Unconventional Schedule for Historic Guwahati Test
The upcoming second Test match between India and South Africa in Guwahati has introduced an unusual twist to the traditional cricket schedule. Due to early sunset timings in North East India, match officials have decided to flip the conventional order of lunch and tea breaks. The Test will begin at 9 a.m. with tea scheduled at 11 a.m., followed by lunch after the second session.
Players Share Mixed Reactions to Schedule Change
Indian batsman Sai Sudharsan, who is being considered for the crucial No. 3 position, showed remarkable adaptability towards the schedule change. "I don't mind having tea before lunch," Sudharsan told JioStar's 'Follow The Blues'. "I already drink tea during lunch, so I'll probably enjoy it. Of course, it's new, but we'll get used to it. It's exciting to explore."
The South African camp displayed varying responses to the unconventional arrangement. Spinner Keshav Maharaj demonstrated a pragmatic approach, stating, "We actually heard about it recently. It's an interesting one, but you can understand the thinking behind it. Sunlight becomes a factor, so they're trying to maximise playing time. We respect the rules put in place."
However, middle-order batsman Aiden Markram expressed some reservations about the departure from tradition. "It's interesting. I'm not the biggest fan of it, to be honest," Markram admitted. "I think Test cricket should always start at 10 a.m. with lunch followed by tea. But those are the cards you're dealt, and you just get on with it."
Focus Remains on Cricket Despite Schedule Tweaks
Beyond the meal timing discussions, both teams are concentrating on the crucial cricket contest. India trails the series 0-1 after the first Test and needs a strong performance to level the series against the world champions.
Indian pacer Mohammed Siraj emphasized the learning opportunity presented by facing a strong South African team. "When you're playing against a good team, and you're bowling against good batsmen and taking their wickets, you get a lot of confidence," Siraj explained. "Because when you play against a strong team, you quickly realize where you're making a mistake."
The historic Test match represents a significant moment for Guwahati, which is hosting its biggest cricket match featuring international stars like Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, and South African captain Temba Bavuma. Despite the unconventional schedule, players from both sides appear determined to deliver an exciting contest for cricket fans in North East India.
