The International Cricket Council (ICC) has approved a significant change in playing conditions, allowing the use of both pink and red balls in the same Test match. This decision, announced on June 1, 2026, aims to provide flexibility for day-night Tests and adapt to varying light conditions.
New Ball Regulations in Test Cricket
Under the new rule, teams can switch between pink and red balls during a Test match. The pink ball is traditionally used for day-night Tests due to its better visibility under floodlights, while the red ball is standard for daytime play. The ICC believes this change will enhance the spectacle and allow matches to continue seamlessly despite changing light.
ODI Playing Condition Update
In One-Day Internationals (ODIs), the ICC has altered playing conditions to permit head coaches or their designees to consult with teams during scheduled drinks intervals. This move is intended to improve strategic input and player management during matches. The consultation will be limited to the designated breaks and must not delay play.
The changes were ratified by the ICC Cricket Committee and will come into effect from the next international series. These adjustments reflect the governing body's ongoing efforts to modernize the sport while maintaining its integrity.
