India's AFC Asian Cup Qualifier Squad Sees Limited Changes Under Coach Khalid Jamil

Panaji: In preparation for India's upcoming AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifier against Hong Kong, coach Khalid Jamil has announced a national team probables list with only two new inclusions—goalkeeper Albino Gomes and defender Bijoy Varghese. This match, scheduled for March 31 in Kochi, concludes India's campaign in a challenging qualifying group where they currently sit at the bottom of the four-team table after five winless matches.

Strategic Adjustments Amidst Qualification Setback

With India already eliminated from qualification contention, Jamil had considered implementing significant roster changes to build for the future. However, sources reveal that the squad remains largely unchanged, featuring primarily players from Mohun Bagan Super Giant and Bengaluru FC, who constitute over 50% of the team. The limited turnover is attributed to the unavailability of younger talents, as many are committed to the India U23 squad for a tri-nation series in Arunachal Pradesh against Tajikistan and Bhutan.

Notable absentees include promising youngsters like Mohammed Sanan, Mohammed Aimen, Bikash Yumnam, Vibin Mohanan, Paramveer Singh, Mohammad Suhail, and Suhail Bhat, all of whom are part of the U23 setup. This constraint has forced Jamil to rely on experienced players, with Albino and Bijoy being the sole fresh additions to the senior team.

New Faces Bring Consistency and Experience

Albino Gomes, currently with Jamshedpur FC in the Indian Super League (ISL), has been a reliable presence in goal, contributing to his team's strong push for the ISL title under coach Owen Coyle. Having previously played under Jamil at multiple clubs, including Jamshedpur FC last season, Albino will compete for a starting role against established goalkeepers Gurpreet Singh Sandhu and Vishal Kaith.

Bijoy Varghese, a defender for Punjab FC, has been an automatic choice in defense, showcasing consistent performances in the ISL. His inclusion adds depth to India's backline as the team looks to end their campaign on a positive note against Hong Kong.

Logistical Preparations and Club Coordination

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has already notified clubs about the probables list, ensuring smooth coordination ahead of the international fixture. The national team camp is set to commence in Kochi on Monday, coinciding with a break in the ISL schedule for the FIFA international window. This timing allows players to focus solely on national duties without club conflicts.

Despite India's higher ranking, their winless streak has positioned them at the bottom of the group, making this final match against Hong Kong a crucial opportunity to salvage pride and gain momentum for future competitions. The limited changes in the squad reflect both the challenges of player availability and Jamil's strategy to maintain stability while integrating select new talents.
